Photos ~ Dockyard Derby Dames bout
Saturday night Sarah, ensie, and I went to the third bout of the Dockyard Derby Dames' season. We didn't entirely know what we were getting into but had a great time. The Soccer Center over off Portland Ave and I-5 was busy with spectators, bar patrons, and plenty of roller derby women. There were plenty of seats in the bleachers above the arena and lots of floor space just outside the track itself. A nice lawn chair or blanket would work well if you want to be close to the action. Thankfully the program for the evening along with a demonstration by some local roller derby kids explained the rules of the game. Which I cannot repeat. Mostly because I was still a bit confused by them.
Once the racing started there was plenty of good strategy on display and definitely some rough-n-tumble hits and spills. Pretty amazing with a little forward momentum and a nudge from a neighboring derby girl can do to land you nearly into the crowd. Teams competing were the Femme Fiana's, Hellbound Homewreckers (led by the Red Hot's very own Chris), Marauding Mollys, and the Trampires. The four teams skated a couple matches each in between which there was a halftime that included a live band and some seriously talented trick/dance/skater guys.
Like I said, I didn't completely understand the scoring but those ladies were awesome and we had a great time out there.
