Photos ~ Apple Store Opens; Mall, Apple Try Best to Kill Excitement

The Apple Store at the Tacoma Mall opened. Love 'em or hate 'em, it's a big new business that decided to locate here. I have an iPod touch and we use Macs at work so it'll be good to have a place closer than Tukwila whenever problems come up or we need something new. There were tons of excited people dutifully shuffling in as the new store allowed them in. The line stretched down one corridor of the mall and out the door.

However, and sadly, mall security quickly started telling citizen journalists like myself and any Apple fanboy/girl snapping a cellphone pic it wasn't allowed. Apparently Apple was big against any shots of their storefront (doesn't seem so outside or inside their store in NY) but the Simon mall people themselves said photos weren't allowed in the mall at all. I'm sorry, but this is just one more reason to go local and why I'm not a fan of the Tacoma Mall. This, an exciting day for many here in town, is to be stifled by rules that can't be bent for a special occasion?

Take note Apple and/or Simon: do it right next time. Hey, do it like local clothier Nordstrom did when they opened their new Tacoma Mall space: Let people snap away and, even better, reach out to the community of local bloggers and invite them to come cover the even to generate positive buzz. Had that been the case I would've likely written a simple blog entry about the Apple store opening with more photos of excited patrons, blah, blah, blah. Instead, they get a rant I decided to spend the energy writing. Well done.

I always do my best to go local whenever possible but this kind of anti-community attitude will have many of my other purchase happen online before they'd ever happen at the mall.
