Nice one! I like it.

Few suggestions for future:
1. button position can be changed (e.g. put in the toolbar ... etc.)
2. ruler can be moved.
3. it will be great if you can make a feature like the snap to object (as in photoshop).

Thank you,

by Yazan

12/22/2004 @ 11:24am

Great suggestions, thanks! I'll add them to the list. The "snap to object" one would be particularly interesting...

Hi!
That is a very nice Extension you have made there! :) I like it very much, but I have a problem, I can't get it to work on my blog (http://forteller.blogspot.com)!
It managed to measure once one time, but when I clicked the "x" and tried again it didn't work again..
Please help! :)

by børge

12/22/2004 @ 6:52pm

very nice !
I do have one problem, if I measure too far to the right side of the screen, the readings go off the screen to the right.

If you scroll down in a page, and try to use the ruler, it acts funny.

by Yazan

12/23/2004 @ 8:42am

Dan and Yazan: Both of the issues you mentioned are on my list of "known issues" above. I'm pretty sure I can take care of issue #2 above but #1 could be more of a challenge. Stay tuned for updates...

As for børge's problem, I tried MeasureIt out on your blog with Ff 1.0 and it worked just swell. Can you tell me your platform/version and related info so I can do some testing?

Hi!
I use WinXP SP2 with the latest stable release of Firefox (1.0) on an Acer TravelMate 660 and you can find a list of my extensions here: http://indi.trybalink.net/blog/extensionslist.html
Thanks for checking it out! :)
Hmm.. strange, I tried again today, and it worked just fine.. I tried many times that day and as I said, it just worked once one of the times I tried! I don't understand this..

Merry Christmas, anyway! :)

12/24/2004 @ 11:18pm

In what way would this be superior to simply using an ordinary onscreen ruler program?

by Jonas

12/29/2004 @ 8:45am

børge: To make the environment for MeasureIt to work the extension actually adds some lines to the page via the DOM. Maybe I'll take a closer look at your site to make certain none of the insertted styles/code is interfering with yours.

Jonas: I wouldn't say it's superior except that I work/live/play in Firefox and wanted a tool that helped me there. I was also unaware of any on-screen ruler programs but since mine is a Firefox extension it's usable across many OS's.

by KevinFreitas

12/30/2004 @ 3:48am

Very nice extension, only thing I would really like to see is a "hide" option, or at least an option to keep it someplace else.

by Charlie

12/30/2004 @ 8:46am

Charlie: Thanks for the comment! Are you referring to the icon to launch MeasureIt? Would you rather get to it from the right-click context menu or somewhere up in the tools menu? What if it were a button you could add to the toolbar at top using the "Customize" option?

Cheers!

2/5/2005 @ 2:59am

Hello Kevin!

I wanted the extension "MeasureIt" for the Browser
"Firefox 1,0" downloaden.
The Browser announces that a down load is not possible.
Can you help?

Yours sincerely

Stephan

2/5/2005 @ 4:38pm

I wonder if this is how it is supposed to be, or if it's behaving odly...
Everything seems to function just fine, only thing is the actual "point" (i.e. the corner mark) appears at the very bottom tip of the crosshair cursor (when you click to select the corner points). I am used to having the *center* of the crosshair be "the official point", not right below. Is this where it is "supposed" to be?

Kitty

by Kitty

2/6/2005 @ 9:36am

Kitty: Right now MeasureIt has a major bug where any scrolling down a page throws its measurements way off. This is the first item on my list of known issues above and may explain what you're seeing. Try turning on MeasureIt on a page before you scroll and you'll see how it /should/ behave.

Cheers! ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

2/6/2005 @ 1:45pm

Well, I tried that and the same thing happens. It doesn't seem the measurements are off any. It is just that when you click to "drop" a corner, and then another one, the point that appears does not appear in the center of the crosshairs (and no, I didn't move the crosshairs while clicking), instead it appears at the tip of the bottom of the up-and-down crosshair axis

Thanks, Kitty.

by Kitty

2/8/2005 @ 10:50pm

Can you send me your vitals (e.g. browser version, OS, resolution, etc.) so I can attempt to figure this one out?

Thanks! ~ Kevin

2/11/2005 @ 9:08am

Thanks for developing this one. It is extremely useful.

by Chris

3/1/2005 @ 6:13am

A fantastic extension. I used Meazure from www.cthing.com. An advanced free measure tool, but a measure tool in your browser is a bit more user friendly, because that's where I measure.

I'm surprised your tool isn't yet available at Mozilla Update :: Extension (https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/)

by Anand

3/1/2005 @ 6:28am

Thanks Anand. I've got some updates and bugs to fix but I really appreciate the kind words.

I actually just found my submission for the Mozilla Update :: Extension site and it hasn't been touched since Jan. 7. Don't suppose anyone out there knows how to speed up these listings?

by KevinFreitas

3/6/2005 @ 2:34am

It would be nice for the download on this page to indicate the current version, since the filename/link gives no clue. (I like to periodically update my extensions by hand). Enough of the site, as far as the extension itself, thank you... this should prove useful for web authoring...

by Kyle

3/6/2005 @ 12:16pm

Good idea, Kyle. I also tagged the page with a "Last Updated" date. I hope to make some strides with MeasureIt in the next month or so to rid it of some of the known issues listed above. Got another web development extension in the works that may also prove useful. Stay tuned...

by KevinFreitas

3/6/2005 @ 12:47pm

Thanks to everyone out there who have given the Firefox ruler extension MeasureIt a chance! Since I released 0.1 in December it's been downloaded over 1,500 times!

I hope to begin plowing through the know issues listed above and could certainly use any feedback you may have to make this an even better extension.

~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

3/22/2005 @ 3:04pm

I found that you cannot install MeasureIt 0.2 without first removing 0.1. If you don't it really screws up all the extensions.

by Robert Janc

3/22/2005 @ 8:13pm

Thanks for the info, Robert. Did you do an auto-update or install it manually? I'll be sure to post a note on this site here (and on the extensionsmirror.nl site). ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

3/23/2005 @ 7:26am

I did an auto-update.

by Robert Janc

3/23/2005 @ 9:18pm

When I uninstall it - it does not uninstall - it still runs at firefox startup but the extension is greyed out in the extension list - please fix the uninstaller and please tell me how to remove manually!

by Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Flim

3/25/2005 @ 3:39pm

An update in mozilla popped up today for MeasureIt. So I updated without uninstalling MeasureIt 0.1, because I didn't know about this page yet. The update has hosed Mozilla. It just hangs when I start it. I then uninstalled Mozilla, reinstalled mozilla. Fresh install still shows the greyed MeasureIt Icon in the bottom. Mozilla hangs after start, I can't enter a URL or use any drop down menus. For some reason, after an uninstall of Mozilla, and a reinstall, Mozilla thinks MeasureIt is still there.

The version of Mozilla I use is Firefox 1.0.1

This is my work computer, and I'm desperately tryign to save it. This is super annoying.

I think I need the old version of MeasureIt, 0.1, so I can install it by dragging it into Mozilla and then choosing to uninstall it.

Any ideas? This is VERY annoying.

by Christian

3/25/2005 @ 5:34pm

Christian: For the near-term you can wipe MeasureIt from your machine by following these instructions:
- close Firefox
- Open c:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\
Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\GIBBERISH\extensions
- remove the {75CEEE46-9B64-46f8-94BF-54012DE155F0} folder
- re-open Firefox -- you should be fine now, from there you can go into the Extensions window and disable MeasureIt

In the meantime, I don't recommend going back to 0.1 since I'm not really sure where the problem lies in the first place. I need to figure out why this is happening. Sorry for the trouble but hopefully I can stabilize this. Stay tuned...

by KevinFreitas

4/6/2005 @ 6:12am

This is a very useful extension. Congratulations!

The only problem I've found is I can't enable the rule on pages with framesets. Is this a known issue?

by 6q

4/6/2005 @ 6:38am

Actually, 6q, it is and I'll add it to the list of known issues. Thanks for the prompting and enjoy! ~ Kevin

4/11/2005 @ 12:06pm

Great job, Kevin, thnx a lot!
A suggestion: It would be cool to be able to deactivate ruler by right-clicking anywhere on the page (in addition to clicking on its icon) - just like with the ColorZilla extension for example
:o)

by richard

4/17/2005 @ 5:55pm

Hi
Is it possible to add a scale changer with the different units proposed in 'Future Features'. I'd love to be able to scale drawing measurements off the screen.
An area calulator ?

by Jim

4/17/2005 @ 10:13pm

richard: I believe I can manage a right-click activation. Something that has a check by it if it's on kinda' thing?

Jim: I dropped that on the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

4/20/2005 @ 8:31pm

Awesome extension! Coupled with Webdev tools, DOM Inspector and the javascript console, firefox is quite the developer tool.

Keep up the great work!

by Nathan DeGruchy

4/22/2005 @ 8:43pm

Kevin: I meant this: I left-click the MeasureIt icon - it's activated. Now, to deactivate it, I could either left-click the icon again (as now) or right-click anywhere on page.
No context menu item is neccessary.

by richard

4/25/2005 @ 12:04am

Very, very well done.

by Thomas Chronz

4/26/2005 @ 4:40pm

So good this extension of yours. Yet nothing to complain, but I have a suggestion:

As soon as I saw it, I thought: measure selection, but it is not possible. It would be great if the extension could measure any thing selected, be it text, image, form field. Don't know if it is possible, it's just an idea.

by O Rapouso

4/26/2005 @ 7:26pm

Awesome stuff!
Here's my wishlist... If you click to the left, or above the first point, then the first point is repositioned, otherwise the second point is repositioned.

Also, ability to fine-tune the measurement selection by 1px at a time - either by the cursor keys, or some buttons (perhaps super-imposed over the blue selection)

But, its already so useful, so thanks again!

by Mr Speaker

4/26/2005 @ 8:23pm

I added in the ability to move the first point by clicking to the left, or above the first point. In the measureOverlay.js, after the "else if(firstClick==1){" in the place of:
x2 = tempX;
y2 = tempY;
I used:
if (tempX < x1 || tempY < y1 )
{
x1 = tempX;
y1 = tempY;
}
else
{
x2 = tempX;
y2 = tempY;
}
Might be useful to others who want this.

by Mr Speaker

4/27/2005 @ 3:50am

It´s really useful for webdesigning and
saved me a lot of time already :-)

Where´s the next version ? ^^

by Patrick Metz

5/4/2005 @ 1:09pm

A little zoom box that shows the precise location of the cursor would be a nice feature.

by CooLynX

5/5/2005 @ 8:48am

How about a keyboard shortcut?

by Gordon Barber

5/9/2005 @ 2:44pm

Great idea!!!
One more wish:
-Copy to clipboard ("235 x 488" format, for example).
Another idea on the fly, a litle toolbox beside de X close button could be nice.
Many thanks for your effords.

by Paulo

5/13/2005 @ 11:28pm

Very good useful extension. Thanks Kevin.

But I am not able to measure Flash objects. They disappear if I activate the ruler. It will be great if you solve this issue.

Thanks for the info, Muthu. It's on my bug list and I hope to have it solved soon. Cheers! ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

5/16/2005 @ 6:06pm

Hey there, great extension and very useful. I'd like to see a "resize" function added; you know, like the little squares that show up on the sides and corners of objects in PhotoShop and other graphics programs. That would enable more accurate measuring.

by Matthew

5/18/2005 @ 1:27pm

Appreciate today's update. Since I installed the extension I've constantly been trying to drag and drop to measure something. Appreciate the good work!

by Brian

5/18/2005 @ 1:36pm

Not sure if it's possible, but having the color of the cursor be inverted of the hovered element would be nice because it's difficult to see it on some pages.

by Tristan

5/18/2005 @ 3:42pm

Tirstan: That's the reason I have that semi-transparent, velum cover the page to try and equalize things so the cursor is more visible. Also, I'm not sure if the cursor can be inverted -- at least not with CSS which is how I change it the crosshairs now.

by KevinFreitas

5/19/2005 @ 8:31am

It would be nice if this extension also told you the width and height of elements on the page. I imagine while you are mousing over the page, what ever is underneith, the height and width is presented. For example, images, tables, table cells...

by marc

5/19/2005 @ 10:10am

marc: I was just thinking about doing something like that. I've added it to the features list above. Cheers! ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

5/19/2005 @ 1:49pm

Hey Kevin, here is another.

All I want to do when I am done with measureit is to hit esc. Can you program that in?

by marc

5/19/2005 @ 1:53pm

Ah, I see the esc key is done now that I have seen the features list. Great work.

by marc

5/20/2005 @ 3:33am

Rulers are misplaced in this site : http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/ . I'm using Windows 2k, and FireFox 1.0.4, with MeasureIt 0.2.8. I haven't yet tried under Linux. Hope this will help this great tool :)

by Damien Szczyt

5/20/2005 @ 6:31am

Damien: Thanks for the link. I can see the problem here, too. The only thing I can see that may be the issue is that this site is XHTML 1.0 strict and my CSS for MeasureIt may not be up to "strict" snuff. Up it goes on the bug list. Thanks again! ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

5/25/2005 @ 5:39am

Is there any way to make MeasureIt work with the NoScript extension enabled?

It would be nice if MeasureIt displayed the x and y coordinates of the cursor position. (Distance in pixels from top left.)

The x and y coordinates above an image would help with image map.

by marc

5/25/2005 @ 6:54am

marc: I'm working on getting MeasureIt further out of the webpage space so NoScript won't interfere (which I'm not really pleased with anyway). I could certainly add in screen cursor coordinates I just need to find a clean way to display them. As for image coordinates, that'll probably have to wait until I begin working on features like displaying of widths and info for elements on the page. Right now MeasureIt sits completely on top of any page and doesn't interact with it in any meaningful way.

Thanks for the feedback/question! ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

5/27/2005 @ 5:48am

Tried it with FF 1.0.4 on winXP - no" xhtml strict" problem on www.drupal.org which is also xhtml strict...

by jpoesen

5/27/2005 @ 5:53am

About the xhtml strict bug : notice that the problem does not occur on that debian site when you disable all css. I'm guessing the voice-family hack is interfering here...

by jpoesen

5/27/2005 @ 6:25am

jpoesen: thanks for the reassurance -- I hadn't had a chance to test this out. I looked around the CSS on that debian site and found that they have a very generic style on all div tags that pushes the margin and padding in. Gotta love that. I'm currently trying to get MeaseureIt out of the page and more on top of it so these sorts of conflicts don't arise. Cheers! ~ Kevin

Kevin

Just dloaded MeasureIt for Firefox and while it shows up in the installed extensions list, I can't see it on my toolbar or elsewhere. Am I missing something? Is it possible it doesn't work on Mac?

by Jay

8/6/2005 @ 9:04am

Jay: You should see a small ruler icon in your status bar that you can click on to activate MeasureIt. I'm releasing a new version today that also allows for a button to be placed anywhere in your toolbars. I've tested MeasureIt on an OS X Mac and it worked just fine.

by KevinFreitas

9/12/2005 @ 2:31am

Would it be possible to configure MeasureIt not to use a 'grey' transparant overlay? This slows down the extension enormously on my Linux machine. If this could be changed via preferences that would help a lot :)

by Spider007.net

Excellent! Thank you.

In addition to nudging, it would be nice to have a way to change the size of the ruler in small increments. I'm pretty good at getting the crosshairs in the right spot to start, but sometimes I release the mouse button before the lower right corner is correctly positioned.

kudos to you

by redman68

10/10/2005 @ 8:25am

I could not install this program.
I am an experienced PC and web user but I had no sucess installing this extension.

Clicking on the download link in Firefox 1.06 did nothing.
I saved it onto my WinXP system by right-clicking and "Save Link As."
I tried to execute the measureit.xpi saved file but Windows did not know how to handle it.
Neither do I.

This tool would be amazing if you could have the feature to "zoom" in on the page and having it snap to pixels. other than that id rather just take a snap shot of somthing and drag it into photoshop.

10/16/2005 @ 4:04am

There's a little error in the JS console due to MeasureIt 0.3.2, just change this line from
#measureit_box.dragging { background: transparent none !important; border: 1px dotted #000; !important; }

to
#measureit_box.dragging { background: transparent none !important; border: 1px dotted #000 !important; }

by Alfonso

10/16/2005 @ 8:45pm

Alfonso: Thanks for the note. Just fixed that and changed how dragging works in the Javascript so it should work better now. Often as one tried to drag a ruler box too fast the cursor would leave the box and it would stop moving. Not anymore.

This is an awesome extension. Just a heads up that it doesn't work in Flock (flock.com), which will hopefully become one of the popular browsers (I like it, why shouldn't everyone else?).

Thanks for the hard work and great results.

10/23/2005 @ 8:22am

Hi,

This is a superb extension that's been beautifully made well done, I was thinking though a screen grab facility would be nice if there were some way of grabbing the insides of the box and storing it to the clipboard etc.

Anyways, keep up the good work.

by Damian Watson

10/29/2005 @ 7:57am

I think there should be an option to extend the box 1 or 5px like there is to make it 1 or 5px =)

Also, I /definitely/ think there should be, as well as the width and height, a distance from the top of the page and left of page. Well... actually, if anyone can think of why this would be useful, that is.....

11/1/2005 @ 6:34am

I think this looks really professional, right down to the icon at the bottom left, well done. I'm not sure if tablet PC's will make this quicrky feature superflous but would like to request two features:

1. That there be the option (once the ruller is activated at the bottom right) to click once to start and then click when finished; this will releave stress on the finger, as the user will not have to keep their finger perminently pressed down.

2. To add a COPY button to the measure bar, much like the 'x' (close) button, this would take a snapshop of the selected area. I know this is for measurement only but it would be nice to evolve it in this way, as an option.

Any way this great extension might be made compatible with firefox 1.5 rc1?

by Mark Richards

11/4/2005 @ 3:35pm

Have you considered accepting donations? Many of us use your product enough to be bothered by FF updates that break it, and probably wouldn't mind rewarding you monetarily for your efforts.

(In case anyone is wondering: this is not a thinly veiled attempt to bribe Kevin into working on a 1.5 update).

by Marshall

11/4/2005 @ 6:55pm

I see... I'll see if I can hammer out an update this weekend. Just FYI to my users out there, I'm working to finish up a couple freelance projects and don't plan to take anymore on so I can focus on fun development like my extensions and other for-fun websites.

I have a seriously long list of extension ideas and need start whittling away at it. Thanks for the nudge everyone and I suppose I could take donations. I'll see about setting up a PayPal link.

any chance an option could be added to choose the location of the statusbar icon (left side, or right side)?

by jae

11/9/2005 @ 9:23am

jae: Options interfaces will get much easier with Fx 1.5 and I'd be happy to add the statusbar location as an option (left, right, or none). There is a toolbar button available to drag into your bar(s) at the top of Firefox if you'd like.

Thanks for the suggestion and watch this space.

No offense intended, but why did you bother with this ruler design when jrule has been around for years and works really really well, better than your new ruler.

by Violet Weed

11/17/2005 @ 1:20pm

No offense taken. I was use to having to screenshot and measure things in Photoshop. I also don't enjoy having too many tools clutter my Windows taskbar. Only other reason was because Firefox is my primary web development medium and I wanted to make an extension. I'm not a real programmer but figured I could manage something with my knowledge of JS and CSS.

So, no real reason other than to create a tool in the environment people do web work in. I'll have to check out JRule sometime. Thanks for your question!

11/22/2005 @ 8:36am

1. When using theme ... like charamel for example, bar with w:,h: and closebox is still using Firefox(default) theme.
2. bar with w:,h:,closebox shuld have shadow ? like other contextmenus ?
3. in the left bottom corner, icon of the measure It dont have margin... and its start with start of the screen

by PaK

11/22/2005 @ 9:17am

PaK: Thanks for your feedback. The width/height bar is actually an HTML element not a context menu so it doesn't conform to themes but its own styling. I'll look into allowing the close button to use the current theme if that'll help.

I'll have a look at the statusbar button in some different themes. I don't use any special themes so I haven't tried it out. I will be adding an option to hide the statusbar button with the release of Fx 1.5.

You say you have many other extension ideas to develop, how about listing them.

And how come when I click the extensions tab in FF to search for new updated versions your came back with nothing, but your site has a new version on it. Can you include it so FF can tell when a new version is available thanks.

by Samuel

12/1/2005 @ 12:52pm

I don't think I'd be able to develop sites like I do without this tool. As Daniel Moore states, would be nice if it worked with IE Tab, (unfortunately I have to develop sites that work on both platfroms, I wish EVERYONE used FireFox) :)

by Brian

Hope they havent been mentioned before, these features would be very nice expecially for usability analysts:
- show surface in pixels
- show surface in percentage of entire screen

This way you can make an analysis of the real estate on a webpage.

by Ruben Timmerman

12/20/2005 @ 6:40am

12/29/2005 @ 4:16pm

Nice extension. It's simple, slick, clean.

A newbie at web devo, I just started paying attention to how folks assemble their page layouts. Just have 2 suggestions. 1st: Please put the 7 lines of "instructions for use" in "Quick Description" of the FireFox Extensions page. This will avoid you getting unnessary posts on the Firefox evals of "how the hell do you use this thing?"

The second is a feature request of the future: Would like to be able to resize the box once it's created.

by imtechie

1/6/2006 @ 1:02pm

Very nice extension. Only problem I have is it doesn't work on pages with framsets. The crosshair cursor appears, but I can't sweep out any measurement boxes.

by AlexL

1/6/2006 @ 1:04pm

One other minor problem is that I have NoScript installed and if I have javascript disabled for a website, then MeasureIt doesn't work. Would be nice if it was fixed, but not a big problem because for the websites I am working on, javascript would be enabled. I just noticed it because I was playing around with it on some external websites where I have javascript disabled with NoScript extension.

by AlexL

1/22/2006 @ 8:17pm

Very nice little tool you've come up with here. I'm actually going to find it rather handy.

If I may offer one (very simple, I think) suggestion, maybe you add the angular distance (hypotenuse) between the two points. Maybe allow for the output to be scaled as well. This would be handy for quick measurements on internet maps.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

by Dan

1/23/2006 @ 5:21am

I work a good amount with PDFLib in ColdFusion. This tool is great because it allows me to calculate the size in pixels of a text box that I will be populating onto a pdf. I just open the RAW pdf template in FF and turn on MeasureIt. Then create the box at the size i need and record the dimensions to put into my code. This is going to save me a lot of time spent massaging the text box size to fit properly.
I have one suggestion though. Would there be any way to add a START and diagonal END position. It would help me and few other people that I work with when we try to calculate the start position of the text boxes. Just a thought! thanks!

2/7/2006 @ 11:36pm

What a handy little gizmo

I notice a few people have asked - so I'll ask too. The origin of the rectangle would be so useful

by Kevin Vinsen

2/8/2006 @ 8:13am

I'm working on a version that allows the user to control what data shows (e.g. origin, diag distance, pixel area). I hope to have it out in the next couple weeks -- I'm working on updating all my extensions. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! ~ Kevin

by KevinFreitas

2/17/2006 @ 7:53am

I have noscript installed like AlexL, it is only by looking for an update for the extension that I came across this info. As noscript is a very popular extension would it not be a good idea to mention the javascript requirement on the mozilla extension page? Thanks for the great extension, very useful for image maps etc.

by Mick

2/17/2006 @ 8:27am

Thanks Mick. I need to try out that extension to figure how I can make it work regardless of it being enabled or not. This extension inserts JS into the document and I would presume that's what hanging it up. I'm always learning...

2/18/2006 @ 1:48pm

If I were to get an additional monitor for my computer, can I drag the box across to the new screen after I make a selection box? Thanks for this tool please.

by Sven

2/19/2006 @ 8:55am

Sven: If your Firefox window extends onto the next monitor MeasureIt's selection box should have no problem going over there. MeasureIt only lives inside Firefox however and cannot be used to measure things outside of it.

3/6/2006 @ 1:49pm

Kevin, I just simply love measure-it!

Now I have a request for an extention which would let me draw multiple vertical, horizontal and angled lines on top of a web page. maybe it would even have the ability to "grow" a transparent screen (like measure-it) from avertically placed line in a given direction (I need left to right) driven by actual time... So the screen would grow with time passing and allow me to track the development of a given event (like an entry into the market)
I am a day trader and would use it to track my entry and exit points... would you be interested in undertaking this?

I cannot program anything, so I need your help.

thanks for the fantastic measure it!

by dimitri

3/6/2006 @ 1:52pm

Oh, and before I forget: If you are not interested in undertaking this project, could you maybe pass this on to someone who would? and could you please let me know in ANY case?

many thanks,

So how's that surface measurement coming along! ;) I don't see it on the features list, while it is so simple, just calc the width and height :)

For the rest: hurrah for Kevin! (sorry, used the tool today for another usability audit to quickly show the website's real estate in pixels, so thought of checking back here)

3/30/2006 @ 12:34pm

I'd be interested in some way to use MeasureIt more effectively with Google (or other) Maps. The main issue would be to pick up the scale from the lower left corner and have distances displayed in the appropriate units. In fact, having the program observe that it's been asked to measure such map and adapt the present scale would be great; I don't know if it's feasible.

very nice utility. I installed it once but never had use for it. But reinstalled it today as I finally found a use for it :)

the font you use to display the size is way too small for old guys like me and it uses a big window for that!. You should also display the ofset of the box. Another feature would be to be able to input a size (and offset) in the size window.

Cheers, Nadim.

by nadim

4/7/2006 @ 2:13am

i think that dimensions shown by MeasureIt shold be decreased by 1pixel (start size is not 0px but 1px, so if you select only 1px it shows 2px width/height)

by mynth

4/12/2006 @ 5:44pm

I discovered this extension recently and find it quite useful. Another reason why Firefox is the only browser to use by the serious professional designer. One question I have is will it be possible in upcoming releases to be able to change the color of the background of the box? Sometimes the blue is hard to see.

Thanks,

4/27/2006 @ 3:32am

Hi again.Having this extension enabled while javascript strict warnings on shows a warning (and four more while using it) of assignment to undeclared variables. It just as easy as set a "var " before of each one of those in order to fix them.

by Alfonso

5/2/2006 @ 12:40pm

You know what would be kewl is:

If I could move the "MeasureIt" label from under the icon to the right side of it using something like userChrome or userContent.css (whichever is used for changing themes and extensions and stuff.)

I'd like to put it on the WebDev toolbar "where it belongs" but it doesn't look right with its label underneath it.

Web Developer is a great extension -- their ruler is good just somewhat buried compared to mine which does one thing and does it well. Besides -- mine's prettier. ;)

Just dloaded MeasureIt for Firefox and while it shows up in the installed extensions list, I can't see it on my toolbar or elsewhere. Am I missing something? Is it possible it doesn't work on Mac?

by Logodesign

12/5/2006 @ 6:31am

Logo (if that IS your real name): I does work on a Mac just fine for me at work. You may have another extensions preventing the button from appearing in the lower right of your status bar. If that's the case, you can add a button to your top toolbar by right-clicking on something like your stop of home button, choosing "Customize" then looking for the ruler button. Drag that to your toolbar then you're all set.

i love this. i had a relative sized div which was causing me problems so i needed to put an absolute size instead. very handy tool. problem i found however is that i measured my div to be 808px but after changing my div width to 808px it was huge. 538px div showed as 808px with this tool.

by themanwhowas

1/22/2007 @ 1:24pm

Awesome stuff!
Here's my wishlist... If you click to the left, or above the first point, then the first point is repositioned, otherwise the second point is repositioned.

Also, ability to fine-tune the measurement selection by 1px at a time - either by the cursor keys, or some buttons (perhaps super-imposed over the blue selection)

But, its already so useful, so thanks again!

cool, extension. thanx,
but i, personel, does not need/want the icon in the statusbar. i'd like to place it on a toolbar especially for my web-dev-extensions.
so do you mind in adding an icon to the toolbar-window and an option to not to show the icon in the status-bar?
this would be a great plus in flexibillity
cheers mate

by ferdie

2/14/2007 @ 11:15am

A great tool! One suggestion: maybe you can show measures in both pixels and actual size (like inche/cm) so that it can be used to measure the size of a thing in the real world (sometime it's hard to find a ruler*-*).

5/1/2007 @ 4:09am

Hello:
great extension.
One suggestion. To me will be great a box to put the measures by hand, not drawing the rectangle.
And another, the posibility of copy the area to clipboard to paste an image, per example, to photosphop.
Thanks for your work, and my best regards.

Great tool, I was just wondering whether you knew about the ruler contained in the Webdeveloper toolbar before you created this?

Hey Beth - Actually, I don't believe Webdeveloper had a ruler when it created this. Plus, mine is prettier and is a far simpler tool overall.

5/23/2007 @ 12:37pm

Hi Kevin, I am looking forward to trying this tool on my PC when I get home later. For now, I have installed it on my work Mac (powerpc style) running OS X v 10.4.9 with Firefox v2.0.0.3. The extension seemed to install correctly and the ruler button turns it on, the active browser page fades back and I get the crosshair cursor. However, I can't draw a box. Nothing ever shows up. When I hit escape the extension closes as it should. Is this a quirk with the extension used on a Mac, or have I misunderstood how this works?

by Beth H.

5/23/2007 @ 1:38pm

Beth: I'm on a Mac at work running an Intel proc with Fx. 2.0.0.3 as well and everything works just fine. If un- and re-installing it a couple times doesn't work, post a list of other extensions you have installed. We may have ourselves a compatibility problem going on.

I love this Extension but recently it stop working all together - and my life is now much more complicated :( . I don't know if it stopped working after the update to Firefox 2.0.0.6 or some other extension, but it did happen recently.

I see that other people have had similar problems. I have tried downgrading to 2.0.0.5 and removing all other extensions and it is just not working. Any ideas as to what might be causing this and does anyone have any possible solutions?

by Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Flim

4/4/2008 @ 8:35am

There's a pretty simple way to make this great extension work for the firefox 3 betas.

Download the extension (save as...) and then rename it from *.xpi to *.zip

Extract the zip to a directory and edit the file "install.rdf" with notepad. Change the em:maxVersion key to something like:

4.0.0.*

zip the folder (or replace that file in your current zip) and rename it back to *.xpi

Go to about:config and add a boolean "extensions.checkUpdateSecurity" and set it to false

Now in the location enter the path to the xpi (including the filename) and hit enter to install.

There might be some bus but so far it's working for me and my life is easier again.
