First rain...

School is currently throwing me in one direction after another. That means errands are and integral part of my spare time. Yesterday I ventured out before about 3 o'clock to try and accomplish three tasks. First, I went into the Admin building here on campus to adjust my schedule. No problem there. When I went outside, they sky had grown dim and winds had begun sweeping through campus. The short hop from Admin to the Library presented me with a mild sprinkling of precipitation. After I finished errand #2 in the Library, the outside had grown even darker than just a few minutes before. Now it was raining.

With one more errand to complete, you might try and group me with most of the rest of humanity by saying that I dreaded the thought of having to brave the rain to get over to the USPS Mail Box. Well don't. While the few people entering and leaving the Library around me ducked and used anything of substantial surface area to shield themselves from the wet annoyance, I contently strolled to the mail box — as slowly as I saw fit. I made sure to soak up the sounds. The smell was perfect. It let you know that this was the first real rain of the year.

Now with absolutely nothing to do other than get ready for wind ensemble, I slowly made my way back to the dorm. One gust after another sent chills from my feet up to my forearms. When I neared Red Square, I saw numerous people scampering for higher ground. One in particular stuck in my mind. A rather large, football player-type. This brawny man was behaving almost more desperately than the others I saw. This large, probably normally macho man was scampering away with more haste than anyone I saw. I found this ironic because a small, skinny guy like me was in absolutely no hurry to leave the life-giving event from the sky.

Before I went into my dorm, I told myself to take a small detour. I found the nearest place that wasn't shielded by trees and went to it. The spot between a few of the dorms was where I stood for a minute or so, with my face toward the source of the rain, eyes closed. Each drop reminded me time after time that this was rain.
