Wanna go for a test drive?

Waking up after a rather early morning arrival in my room here at Valdosta State University wasn't easy. Although I seem to have no problem adjusting to this time zone. After a shower I went a couple buildings over to the University Union building to grab a bite to eat. It's a normal cafeteria-type place with a twist. There's a salad bar and pastries strewn about. To my surprise there was a large area with a grill. I figured I wanted something hot and ordered a bacon and egg sandwich. I'd never had one before but I am happy to report that it was really good. Even though the eggs were a bit runny I was very satisfied. I can deal with this kind of food.

After rounds of being introduced to nearly everyone in the county, Dr. Leake took Erika and I to a VSU Kiwanis Club lunch. After a great conversation with a couple with whom I talked about the Northwest the meeting began. Everyone rose, pledged allegiance to the flag, and sang a few verses of America in honor of the upincoming Memorial Day. A greeting from VSU's president gave way to an introduction to a man responsible for expansion of the university. The [glaringly Southern] man ran through slides, facts, and figures promoting the longevity and progress of VSU. Amidst very wealthy members of Valdosta's community, the man came across like a slimy used-car dealer. Maybe it was the Texan twinge in his voice or a push to get more funds to keep expanding the university. Whatever it was, I really wanted to go out and test drive a lemon or two!

Dr. Leake then drove Erika and I to Publix to get groceries. Neither of us has ever really lived alone but are convinced that we can survive. I've pledged to myself to cook. We'll see about that. Driving to and fro the sky was filled with a noticeable brown haze. Fires burned in the Okeefenokee Swamp on the border between Georgia and Florida. The winds were just right to cover this town and as the evening progressed more of the veil covered us. I went outside to take some photos and got a headache after only a few minutes in it.

Without a computer to siphon my minutes away, Erika and I hung out all night playing cards. Erika will be studying variable galaxies and I will be focusing on asteroids and signs of water therein. With these tough subject ahead of us what games did we play? War. 123. Yeah, not too sophistocated. It did make for a good time to talk to one another about our lives. After the games ran down a bit Erika started to construct a card house. I got out the camera and tried to take photos of it. When my body told me it was time to sleep we adjurned for the night. What a time. To be in a foreign place and able to hang out with someone for hours with nary a lull in the conversation. I think this summer will go pretty well.
