My first day
Today marks the first day of my work here and boy do I have a lot to learn. As a Geosciences major, the only knowledge I have of the Solar System and the cosmos is from my own teaching. Nothing really theoritical or anything. Knowing that I'm going to have to learn how to use telescopes, equipment attached to them to take measurements, and study up on asteroids themselves, I'll surely have plenty to keep me busy this summer. I am looking forward to all of it though.
Not only am I spending time in the office today meeting people and getting to know the building but my boxes from home came! I shipped 3 boxess worth: my VCR, CDs, the computer, and other random items. Seems like a lot but, believe me, this room is really empty. So I got everything back to my room, unloaded my stuff, and hooked the ol' computer up. I gave a call to a local internet service provider and was soon putting around online. My days of silence are over! I no sooner dialed the IPS' phone number than saw my closest friends on ICQ. Real time conversations make all the difference.
This line of communication (mostly) with people from the west coast is also fascinating. I revel at the fact that a mere modem can allow me to share words with people 3,000 miles away. I never try to take technology for granted but when it's as to type a message across a continent as it is to make a local phone call, I find it difficult not to take it in as a part of normal life. I'm not dependant upon it but I sure do appreciate its power. I do often wonder what my high school friendships would be like today or my relationship with Sarah without being able to affordably talk while separted from one another. If there was one inventor to all the technology that went into these tools, I would write them a letter thanking them.
