Asteroid pickin'

11am this morning was time for the group of asteroid lubbers to get together and finalize the list of potato-shaped planetary bodies we'll observe at Kitt Peak later this week. We narrowed the field down to about 28 minor planets all as high above the horizon as possible and all in a row along the night sky. With visible magnitudes well within our viewing limits, all we can hope for now is some great photometric evenings (no clouds and few particles in the atmosphere). One other problem with observing such small, dark objects is distinguishing them from the background stars. Some of the fields we'll be looking for an object in are crowded areas with the Milky Way in the background. The challenge will lie there. Otherwise, we'll be in pretty good shape for our run. Should be an incredible experience. I'll be taking a Zip disk or two out to store all the photos I'll be taking.

After Jason Gaines and I spent the afternoon printing out ephemeris and finder charts from our new and improved asteroid list, Dr. Leake drove us over to the mall to check up on Jason Looper. Amidst nasty, tropical storm-like weather we drove to a fro the mall. I watched TV for an hour or so until Jason and Amanda came to take Erika and I out to dinner along with Jeff and Dr. Leake. We went to a great (and strangely named) place called The Mellow Mushroom. A great relaxed atmosphere with wood flooring, good music, and sports on the TV greeted us along with what turned out to be an incredibly tasty and spicy jerked chicken sandwich. Thing was great. It was great bread overflowing with green peppers, tomato, and the amazing flavored chicken. Mmm... I was tearing and sniffling from the spice of it all. In heaven I was.

Not too much else going on except for a bit of lighting and reflection work in Hash on my part. I'm trying to get used to some of the different lighting effects as well as achieving photo-realism with shadows and reflections. Hopefully I'll be able to put all this to good use sometime soon.
