Oop! I found the storm

Work today led me back to some articles Dr. Leake sent me a while back. Mostly covering background information on our research topic, I read it today to brush up on the concepts and ideas behind our search for water of hydration in C-type asteroids. Many asteroids have been placed into groups by various researchers mostly based on mineralogical composition. C-type asteroids are such that they have surfaces composed of material that contains evidence that either today or at one time water altered the minor planet's surface material. From the identification of such minerals and this water of hydration, research hopes to lead towards putting one more piece of the Solar System's past in place. If minerals were altered by water, how did that happen? If a heating event caused it, what could've heated the asteroids? Some hypothesis exist that seem to (excuse me) hold water but need further studies to add information to the pool of knowledge holding the answers. Dr. Leake, Jason, Jason and I are just trying to do our part.

I also broke in my new 8-meg memory chip today. Around dinner time tonight the sky turned an odd shade of dark blue and winds kicked up against the trees. I took a good look and saw a texture in the clouds that filled most of the sky with the appearance of the roiling clouds over New York at the end of Ghostbusters. Like nothing I'd really seen before, I got an odd feeling. I wasn't really afraid that anything was going to happen but when your two eyes see images like that sliding by above you begin to wonder. I thought nothing else but to go out and take pictures.

Tonight brought about the opposite of that storm when a calm, steady rain graced the campus and city. The evening darkness was also accompanied by a constant tremble of thunder from above. When the sky lit up with cracks of lightning, everything was silhouetted against the briefly brightened backdrop. Always the foolish hopeful, I stood steady with camera in hand hoping to catch one of the illusive and powerful meteorological beauties. My kingdom for a manual shutter digital camera. There was no hope for by the time my finger hit the trigger the camera would take its sweet time while the sky did not. It sure was spectacular though.
