Dig that millennial feeling
Although the supposed dawn of the new millennium (which doesn't actually occur for another year) is upon us, I must admit that I feel slightly uneasy about the New Year. I guess I'm not really worried that the entire world will cease to operate. That would be quite a cataclysm and one that I don't think humans are likely to cause themselves. My mind has been super-saturated with the media's images of terrorism and chaos that may (although "unconfirmed") possibly visit various celebrations the country over. Personally I think it's a bunch of hooey. My parents, girlfriend, and hopefully a couple other friends will be hold up here at the Freitas Family Compound just outside of La Center, Washington. We won't be constructing any doomsday weapons or plotting to shut down the world's power grid. The parents will probably be asleep when the New Year rolls over and myself and company will be downstairs almost assuredly channel surfing their way into the year 2000 keeping track of the various millennial broadcasts as they magically transport us to exotic locations that make us think, "Boy, how'd we get stuck here for New Year's?" Nevertheless I'm rather excited (although not the new millennium) that the year 2000 is about one day and 5 hours away. All my life I've marvelled at the mere idea of 2K. It's a time that is very unfamiliar to us (probably because it hasn't occurred yet). I just typed to a friend via ICQ that the year 2000 and above is nothing like certain dates stamped into our brains in history classes. 1492. 1776. 1812. 1999 (for you Prince (or whatever you want to call him now) fans out there). The 20th century now has the esteemed opportunity to slip into history as another one of these sets of four numbers. Now people will refer to it, perhaps not as the 20th century, but as the 1900s, making dates like 1978 sound like ancient history.
As a lover of technology, an advocate of peace, and a dreamer of space I hope that this New Year and the years beyond give us all that we hope for and more. This could be good, folks.
