Liftoff
I'm on my way to Hawaii. Seat H in row 15 is where I reside on this DC-10 flight that marks the beginning of my January abroad. With Kristin as my tolerant neighbor my GPS device tells us we're about 32,000' up with a speed of a little over 500 MPH (thanks for the toy/tool Mom and Dad). Yes it is somewhat pathetic that we've already both busted out our electronic doohickeys to keep us occupied on the flight I with my GPS and Li'l Shefa and she with her color Gameboy.
The morning got off to a pleasantly uneventful (albeit early) start. When my alarms went off at 4:30am I had no trouble understanding that it was worth the trip I was about to take. With little to pack I bid Sarah my love, wished her a fantastic trip, and headed down to Rieke to meet the Hawaii bunch. With a couple other GEOS profs at the wheels of two PLU vans there was very little traffic and only a little snow mixed with rain to get in our way. SeaTac airport presented no problem for us and we all checked our baggage, hopped on the airport's little subway system, got poked and probed (not really) at the metal detectors, and sat around talking and eating what the nearby food court had to offer. Of the prices, Nick and I had to say only that we were being raped. Such is the life of the hungry traveler.
So as Kristin and I sit here with our techno-toys, we cruise over the Pacific towards new time zones and stores geared toward anyone with an open wallet. Mahalo for now!

Sky high room with a view
I am happy to report a flawless, and actually rather smooth, flight from SeaTac. After wait patiently outside the Honolulu Airport for our rental cars and drivers we weaved our way through traffic toward the hotel. Once there, more waiting, then room assignments. The guys and I are in a somewhat connected pair of rooms on, get this, the 30th floor of this place! I can say that the view of the city and this cool building is rather stunning and only slightly disturbing. I have never had the nervous pleasure of sleeping quite this far above the ground. It is a great room with a small fridge in here and a full kitchen with stove, pots and pans, and a real fridge at our disposal. At any rate, happiness abounds and I now allow my much fatigued body the pleasure of relaxing after a long and wonderful day.
