Chug, chug, chug!

Waking up today soon led to a fantastic time snorkeling in Hanama Bay. We all actually hit the rough water after a brief environmental lesson administered by a volunteer there at the park. Once we sauntered down the road leading down to the bay we all dawned our water traveling gear and began gliding across the water's surface above the coral below. My body is all to fat-free to put up with even the Hawaiian water temperatures. This only allowed me to snorkel among the vibrant parrot fish (and others) for somewhere around an hour-and-a-half until I gave in to my body's chill. It was a great experience that, with the unavoidable exception of my flippers scraping against the top of the delicate coral, only adds to my positive opinion of snorkeling. When on this island two years ago this month I took this same snorkeling trip and came away disappointed due to my utter lack of swimming skills. This time was different because I took a swimming class late in my freshman year. It made all the difference, except for
that stupid weight problem of mine. ;)

Following the whirlwind that has been the trip thus far, we then drove just outside of town and passed through a tunnel into the very jurassicy Diamond Head crater. The hike to the top of this local landmark was swift and well worth the energy expended, for at the top awaited 360° of eye candy. A gem of ocean sparkled with white caps to the south, city skylines to the east and west, and eroded and vegetated hills to the north. As we all took rolls and rolls of photos on the windy tourist spot I reveled in the beauty of my surroundings. I can never truly get used places like Diamond Head. I guess it's amazing to me to be able to find such unique and picturesque locales within minutes of some of the US's largest cities. It is, however, sad at the same time for without us such places would surely be more common.

Finally tonight most of the group walked from our hotel to a local Chili's restaurant. Fourteen people strong, our group was soon admitted into the establishment. We had a great server who had to put up with our constant needs and loud tableside manner. The poor guy almost had himself a haircut when he elevated himself on a chair to get a better angle shot of the group. Tomorrow is Matt's Birthday and he was excited when the waiter accepted his plea to have a drink because he convinced him his Birthday had come in his home time zone. The custom the waiter let us in on required Matt to inhale an entire margarita without stopping. With our cheering, support, and while we took pictures Matt somehow took in the entire drink. The effects were almost immediately obvious. Needless to say he was a happy camper for the rest of the meal/evening. After dinner most of us wandered through the International Marketplace one last time before we leave for the Big Island tomorrow. Man, I hope Matt can hold his liquor.
