New Yurt Years - Day 3
(2001: A Yurt Odyssey)

The moo of a distant fog horn gently navigated me out of the fog of my night's sleep. Again, as with the other days on this trip, the Sun shown bright in the morning sky. Low clouds sped overhead in a breeze that only slightly penetrated the cover of trees all around the campsite. Once awake, Gavin and I seized the opportunity to take some pictures amidst the trees and other foliage in the park. Unfortunately the dawn of today meant that our adventures in Yurtland had to soon come to an end. We ate a filling sausage and pancake breakfast prepared by Amanda and Aaron on the small wooden porch outside of the "Party Yurt". Shortly thereafter everyone mobilized and we were all soon bidding Ft. Stevens a fond farewell.

My car separated from the others for a brief stop at a pond we saw yesterday on our trip out to the point. The strange, totally still body of water was covered in a leafy reddish-pink material. The plant made it look like a strange scene from a bad sci-fi movie. I snapped a few photos then headed toward home.

Today we decided to drive along the Washington side of the Columbia to see some different territory. We crossed the lengthy Astoria Bay Bridge and Sarah snapped some pictures of the view around us. Calmly she wondered why my camera seemed to be in black and white mode. I knew that, prior to our leaving the yurts, I took a handfull of pictures in greyscale color. Unfortunately it appeared that I left it in that mode – even when I took pictures of the unusual pink pond. Doh! I am the original moron. Life goes on but I will, needless to say, go back to that same pond at Ft. Stevens to get the photos I wanted in the first place. So, on with our drive back.

A distance down the road the four of us (Sarah, Leah, Erin and I) stopped at an old covered bridge. I forget what town it's in but I've visited that same landmark at various times and on various trips to the coast in my life. I just wanted to share it with them and with you now.

So as fog settled in around the Columbia, cloaking our drive home, we briefly rested at Erin's house then pushed onward toward Tacoma so she and Leah could start their drive back to east the east side of the state. I was happy to be out of the car once we got home. I had a wonderful time camping with all my friends and I hope they felt the same. I always mark this sort of time together away from home as invaluable and I thank each one of them for choosing to spend part of their holiday with one another.
