Apartments, manuscripts, floor plans, basketball, and Heat

First, the apartment. Holly, Sarah and I took off this morning in the new Impreza (and with a freshly burned car CD mix) around 10am to visit the neighborhood surrounding Wright Park just north of downtown Tacoma. We paid a visit to one building with no success in finding its manager and made our way eventually to Park Tower - the apple of Sarah's, Gavin's and my realestate eye. We met with our buddy Brian (for the 2nd time in our lives) and headed up to the 7th floor into a partially emptied 03 room configuration. Since the three of us are looking for a two bedroom place we need it to be a hefty two bedrooms and some. This configuration is the only one in the building that could do the trick. Aside from the shabby condition the apartment was in, we liked the extra space and proceeded to take measurements and ask questions. Once we'd had enough, we hit the streets and headed over to the Karpeles Manuscript Museum.

That's right, the big Dick is here!New to our lives, this museum was a draw from the start. Only once inside did we truly realize how sacred a gem this building filled with rare scribblings and signatures (often the same thing) would be. Privately owned and among six other Karpeles museums, on display today were the writings of many including Hellen Keller, various Henry's, Adolf Hitler, former (and brief) President David Rice Atchison, inventors of state Ben Franklin and gadgets Thomas Edison, and Richard Nixon. It was spectacular! There's nothing quite like seeing such documents first-hand. These writings pull the past into stark perspective to the ways through which we communicate thoughts and ideas today (e.g. the web - no unlike this website). Who knew they were sitting in north Tacoma?! Go! Admission is free and wonders will never cease.

Measurements and pointless perspective drawingsNext on the list is the task of measuring our furniture and placing it over a to-scale floor plan in PowerPoint. The details already worked out by Sarah were beginning to settle in my mind as important issues. The layout of our furniture in an apartment probably half the size of this huge (and somewhat warped) college house would be a task that we're all ready for. Knowing we'd be in an area of town with vastly more sophistocation that our beloved Parkland is comforting to the point where we'll make some minor sacrifices - among which is space. The preliminary assessment looks promising with all major items of furniture fitting well into both the living room and Sarah and my shared bedroom. Gavin will soon put his belongings into the simulation and we should then have a strong picture of how the puzzle will fit together.

Next came the basketball game. PLU's women's b-ball team is involved in the NCAA playoffs this year. A new service offered by my work group (Multimedia Services) is streaming audio and video on the web. Bearing the name LuteCast, the service was to have its debut at last week's game but technical difficulties led to a scrubbed attempt. This week would be different and would see the effects of proper preparation. My boss and I hit the switch at 7pm to begin the broadcast and could listen to our Lady Lutes fashion a win over Saint Benedict with room to spare. With some Saturday work now out of the way, the night could begin.

I took a stroll over to Garfield Street DVD to pick up a movie which caught our eyes today on cable: Michael Mann's Heat. Sarah and I snuggled up on the couch and enjoyed the 172 minute piece of art with nearly every major player in Hollywood giving stunning performances. No trashy sex scenes ruined this rock-solid and intense plot. The draining viewing lead nicely to bedtime and a sleepy night of dreams and kitty licks.
