Getting my Saturday ABCs (Art, Bison, and... Camera!)

Sleeping in can really give you a new lease on life. That what we did this morning and boy did we need it! It's the summer weekends that usually turn out to be the most hectic for traveling as we make frequent trips down to the Vancouver/Portland area we attempt to make the drive in the early morning to avoid people like us today who enjoy a few extra "Z's". We did maintain an iota of a schedule today, however, but first heading across Tacoma to run some banking-related errands. On the way we caught lunch at the Tatanka Take Out near Ruston on Point Defiance to sample their bison-based selections. Bison is supposed to have about half the fat of beef and far fewer calories than chicken. I got a burrito with bison meat and Sarah and bison burger. I don't know if it was the naturally fed bison meat or the garlic hot sauce but something was seriously right with that burrito. Although a bit more expensive than beef we may attempt, now and then, to find some at the store. We don't eat much beef to begin with so maybe it'll be affordable to switch. Probably need a bar-b-q as well, though... But, since I just started a new BECU account, that may happen. Good thing their giving that away and not rifles (see Bowling for Columbine).

Early this evening Sarah and I attended a local juried art competition. Holly Senn, one of my co-workers from the library at PLU, had a piece accepted and invited us to come for the opening night reception. We drove to the nearby, seemingly deserted Tacoma Community College campus. The art building was warm with the bodies of attendees but the artwork was rather good overall. Holly's piece, called Spring, is a beautiful sculpture with a series of roots piercing a thick book out of which grew stalks leading to flowers with pedals of paper and typed text. The books title had the word "Paternal" in it which could also have all sorts of interesting meanings. My shot at it would include the flowers as a triumphant symbol of the role of women in the world that pushed their way through the well-written history of paternal society to emerge as a knew knowledge for the ages as written on their delicate pedals. But that's just my thought. We also saw another artist we know Michael Williams who was showing one of his astrophotos of Mars and Mt. Rainier.

The event was nothing short of inspirational for me as a photographer. Although I completely appreciate photography as art in galleries and competitions I don't believe my digital work can be displayed and truly appreciated how I would want it to be in the printed medium. My camera records the direct electromagnetic interactions of photons of light and records it as an electronic value. To put something like that in analog form would be to betray it. I may attempt to enter some of my work in some juried competitions like todays but need to find a better way to display my work than just printing it out. Perhaps something along the lines of a digital picture frame like I'm building will do the trick. Perhaps the art will be more than just the images themselves...
