Name that cloud!
Today's contest (What? You act as though I've never had a contest on this site before...) is to name this type of cloud. Post your guesses below and the person with the first correct guess will win a free Gmail email account OR to the person with the silliest or most creative answer will go a signed 8"x10" photo of your choice from anywhere among my vast collection of over 44,000 digital images (if beyond a commonly trudged day-trip away, you pay shipping) to be chosen from any at PhotoRealWorld.com or this website.
Here're the clouds:

Cumulus

After posting, I've thought about the answer a little bit more... I believe that the clouds are a form of cumulus clouds called cumulonimbus, which produce heavy thunderstorms in the summer. (I am NOT a nerd, for the record.)

I've seen this exact same cloud before, and lo, so the prophecy was written, so it shall come to be in the year 2004 AD.
We had just come through a nasty firefight on the Southwestern edge of 'Nam and were about 20 klicks into Cambodia when a squadron of Interplanetary Rally UFOs were taking the 2nd lap of their 65,000,000,000 Rally, screaming in low and fast to whip around planet earth and begin the "S" curve back towards Andromedia. One of lowest ships took the curve to sharp and built a bunch of heat up in the earth's atmosphere. He was low enough for me to make out the numbering on his rallyship, and I just turned around to make a comment to Bill "Snake" William, my sergeant, when I got hit on the back of the head with the Rallship driver's goggles (which he must have thrown out over frustration of being so low in the atmosphere). Anyway, when I came to, I was looking up at the silhouttes of all my fellow soldiers huddled around trying to revive me, and in the sky it was those clouds.
I hadn't realized anyone had snapped a photo. I had the goggles too, up until about 20 years ago, when a bunch of guys in dark suits showed up to "borrow" them, and never came back.
Thanks for sharing this with the non-believers!

I'll take a stab at it...
Cumulonimbus mammatus?

Hey Kevin,
After how many years... about 10 or so, I have come across you again. It's been since highschool where we would cross paths in the rare occasion. Now that I'm living in the Virgin Islands, it's a rare occasion that I get to see such clouds. In my opinion, the cloud sets are relatives of the Michillan (sp?) Man.
Hope all is well and it's great to see you're doing pretty good. Everything is great for me. (if you care) Have a great day!

Hey Adam! What are you doing in the Virgin Islands? Were you scrolling through an old yearbook and decide to look me up? It's pretty easy to find me online if you know how to spell my last name.
In other news, we have our winners! Darren is correct that these are cumulonimbus http://images.google.com/images?q=mammatus" target="google">mammatus clouds (although I would've accepted just mammatus) that tend to roil on the under side of a large thunderstorm cell. These showed up just over our house here in Tacoma on July 13th and I'd also seen a nice crop of them hanging over the skies over Valdosta, GA during the summer of 1999. For the correct answer Darren will be receiving a Gmail invitation that he may fill all 1,000 meg worth with spam. JD will receive his choice of signed print from my library of photos for his tale of rallying UFOs over Vietnam.
Thanks for playing and look for more contests in the future!
