Hooray for politics!
Spent some time tonight watching the democratic national convention on TV tonight as I did some freelance remotely on my laptop. It seemed like the liberals were having a grand time of it listening to heart-felt tributes and speeches as well as musical entertainment. I can't tell you why I was drawn to watching this but I'm probably simply interested to put faces to names in some cases. All too often people in this country have a vastly more impressive knowledge of Hollywood stars or serial murderers than we do of our leaders and visionaries. Amid the interviews and podium talk I did see a few faces and match those with a few names and as I'm striving to become a more aware citizen of our world that can really help.
One name/face resolution tonight was that of our local representitive Norm Dicks whose offices I spied in the Union Station building in downtown Tacoma when I was on a break during my recent jury duty stint. He is an interesting representitive who, although a democrat, is in a region where the military is of vital importance and so walks a balance between liberal peace-loving and conservative war-mongering. Now, that's mostly my opinion coming through there but I commend him for his ability to represent such a truly politically diverse area such as this and hope he understands that we appreciate his service. Despite the common misgivings we see in politicians, I think that deep down we all know it's hard work.
I also got to watch Bill Clinton give his speech and, I must say, the man knows how to give 'em. At points he calculates that, to let folks' guard down to make them laugh, you need to allow a taste of southern drawl through as though to speak as an "every man's man" or something. That and he really had some strong comparisons between his 8 years in the White House and the last four of Bush. No matter the case, I think being an ex-President is possibily the most fascinating role anyone could ask for in the world.
But check out JibJab's hilarious take on current politics and the race between rich and richer.
