DSL farts
Since about 9pm last night our DSL service has been down but is now, since you're reading this page, up. I was beating myself up a bit by taking way too much responsibility for said down time as I combed through PC and router settings alike. After a call to a Blarg Online and a Qwest tech it seemed I was reassured that it was a local area outage on the Qwest side of things. Although I did have to wait on the hold for 15 or 20 minutes the Qwest rep I talked to seemed knowledgable and, if she didn't have the answer/access to a problem, she knew where to get it.
I'd also like to commend the folks at Blarg for their continued excellent ISP services. We've been customers at one house or another since we first got DSL in 1999(?) and their product has been consistent for that entire time. We've probably had a matter of tens of minutes of total down time on their part and most of that was planned for their system upgrades that they notified us of beforehand. Cheers to Blarg and cheers to DSL around which a nerd/tech/web developer's everyday life revolves.

I too concluded that it must be an area-wide outage for Qwest, or whomever owns the wires in Tacoma. As soon as Julia called to say the DSL was out at Viva Technology, I stopped worrying about our web server.

Aye. Ignorance is bliss when it comes to this stuff. It's really easy to get caught up in the personal tech support cycle such that you never feel like discontinuing an investigation until it's solved. In this case, I slept on it, tried a couple things this morning, then tossed in the towel and called the service providers. I guess since I have the knowledge to at least begin the troubleshooting process I feel somewhat obligated to do so.
