It's official: announcing Sarah Champion Freitas
A small, non-spam piece of mail arrived today for Sarah from the Social Security Administration. Inside was a new social security card stamped with her newly coined name: Sarah Champion Freitas. With the help of her Name Change Kit™ she made this first step of many to transitioning into life as a Freitas. Next she'll have to learn the lyrics to my Dad's waffle song, how my Mom makes deviled eggs, and how my brother and sister used to tie me up when I was annoying -- hmm, that last one could be a little dirty in Sarah's hands (yes!). Anyway... It exciting to know that she was proud enough to be with me that she'd take my name without fuss or hyphenation. At any rate, I love you Mrs. Freitas. Here's to a new identity and new John Hancock!
We also spent some time house hunting in a rather unique fashion: by bike. Sarah and I wound through our local North End streets looking for any sign of a house for sale. We found quite a few and only a couple that were out of our price range. Sometimes our good taste gets the better of us. Similar real estate by bike trips may be in order so we can get to know the neighborhoods we're looking in and, hey, if we don't get run over we'll know what blocks are alternate commuter friendly.
For dinner tonight: Thai food on 6th Ave. at the Wild Orchid. After a recent discussion with Sarah about how willing I am to try new things in the realm of dining we agreed tonight to deviate from our normal meals from Galanga Thai for the nearby Wild Orchid. The food was good and, as Sarah pointed out, slightly more diverse when it comes to some other Asian dishes besides Thai. I found, however, that the Phad Thai was somehow lacking in what I thought was to be the taste sensation that is Thai food: yin and yang, sweet and spicy, crunchy and soft. The flavor of the dish was far more monotone than I would expect and didn't elicit the wonderful response that I normally have at Galanga. Nevertheless, it's another option and may work well for outings with friends or family that haven't experienced Thai but want other choices. I maintain that, among Wild Orchid, East & West Cafe (who totally sold out, in my opinion, when they expanded from a total whole-in-the-wall to a deluxe suite), and some strange Thai place halfway between Parkland and Span away on Pacific Avenue that Galanga has them all beat.
