Island (s)hopping

After a somewhat late start this morning Sarah and I set out to run some errands. First stop came the local DMV. Since our move neither Sarah nor I have taken the time to change our address information on anything. Since our new residence is truly beginning to feel like a home we thought we'd make it official by re-upping our driver's licenses. There was also a bonus in it for Sarah since she also got to change her name and snag a different photo! We had a smooth time with only one surly DMV worker between us. One would think a consumer heading out to shop for an item of furniture would be at least as smooth as a trip the DMV but, lo, this was not the case.

The kitchen in our new house is very long and very wide but has remarkably little counter and cabinet space. Our thought was to better utilize some of this area with a portable kitchen cart. Not only would it make food prep more convenient it would afford us some of that much-need storage. After some browsing online we made a couple calls and started our journey in search of the right island. First stop, Nowheresville. Although the local ____ store said they had some kitchen carts on display and would be open 'til 2pm, upon our noon time arrival we were greeted with a closed sign and a note on the door with a shabby excuse that read something like "We had a meeting but we'll be open again at 9am on Tuesday." Ass. Consume shut down number one. Looks like they'll never see any of our business ever again. From here we made a productive stop at a local PC Club to further my technology plan for the new home. We picked up a wireless router and PCMCIA card for one a laptop then moved on to our next stop to try and find yet another couple elusive kitchen carts. This time we went to some huge warehouse building that wasn't even the company's main showroom. After lunch we went to their main showroom after a quick stop at Seattle Lighting and found they had nothing interesting except a catalog with one island that supposedly only came in black. We moved on to a nearby furniture direct place that had a small cart that we contemplated buying two of to meet our needs. From there we hit Home Depot and got a quote on having an island built. Needless to say, we eventually decided to head home we found exactly what we wanted and ordered online. This all took the entire afternoon and we spent the evening setting up the home wifi. I was pretty proud of myself for getting our Linux-based laptop up and running with wireless.

Although we didn't accomplish as much tangable tasks today we did make some headway. Just a little every day and sooner than we know it we'll be hammering in a "For Sale" sign in our front lawn wondering where the years went.

I think that I could park my "AssUV" SIDEways in THAT space... Who was the civil engineer that designed that parking lot anyway? Not me, that's for sure.

You like my terminology? I made it up quite some time ago (see http://www.kevinfreitas.net/journal/20010131/) and, for some reason, it hasn't quite caught on. I thought, since they can say it on TV, "ass" is just like "hell". Oh well. Silly Puritans with their aversion to explitives, pre-marital sex, legal marijuana, and the like.
