My parents' 35th anniversary
Today marks the passing of the 35th year my parents have been married. I always new I was fortunate to have a good, solid mom and dad while so many others end in separation and divorce. Good things can certainly come from examples that don't match the nuclear family model, there's no doubt. All I'm saying is that once I was old enough to know and understand what divorce was I immediately compared my situation to other kids' and strived to never take what I had/have for granted.
I'm particularly excited for my mom and dad now because I see them entering a new phase in their relationship. For the last few years my mom has been working in a job where she's truly appreciated and loves what she does. After years working at a University to help her kids get through school using the provided benefits she absolutely deserves to crank the pressure down a few notches and have a little more fun from day to day. Even if she'd kept a similar job she not longer has to commute into Portland from Vancouver which saves plenty of stress not to mention paying Oregon income taxes.
The other side of the coin now has my dad enjoying retirement from a job which he tirelessly commuted not just to but through Portland always in the wee hours of the morning. The man has a great work ethic and, although my childhood was vastly different, I only hope I inherited at least a fraction of his problem-solving skills and ability to work hard.
Sarah and I both wish them the very best and can't wait to see what opportunities lie ahead for both of them together. Happy 35th Anniversary mom and dad!

Thanks, Kev, for the nice words. It helps to have three great kids and now son- and daughters-in-law! And from my point of view, the world's greatest husband.

Kevin, I couldn't have said it better. And in fact I didn't, but I'm glad you did.

Such a cool tribute to two great people. I remember when they met -- finally Uncle Joe cared for something (someone) more than his silver car......."Aunt" Kathy was amazing then and is still amazing. And Uncle Joe -- I don't get to see you often enough but I love you and wish you both another 30 years or so!
