Photos ~ Pruning the Japanese maple, Narrows Bridge and Olympic Mountaings

We had a mildly productive but overall nicely laid back day. Sarah's longing to prune our Japanese maples was satisfied today along with a few other things. We headed out in medium-thickness winter gear to soak up the sunshine and prune up our Japanese maples. We have two of the beautiful trees: one of the north and one on the south side of the house. The south side one has much more vigorous growth we felt needed to be shaped and tamed so it wouldn't grow too much on the neighbor's side of the fence and over our walkway to the back yard. We raised it's limbs further off the ground in hopes of forming a more umbrella-like shape to it's canopy. The north side maple didn't need as much trimming but looked better after we gave it a little TLC. To top things off, I laid down some fresh wood chips and we were done in the garden for the day. Maybe if we keep up this trend we won't find a weeks worth of outdoor work awaiting us when Spring comes.

I also headed over to meet Steve (of the Ferguson's at Northwest Snowboards over in University Place to check out some equipment. Since our snowboarding trip last weekend we've been wondering what non-rental equipment might do for our experience on the slopes. We got some friendly help from one of the guys there and he walked us through some of the things we might consider when buying. Best of all we got to try on some really great boots and check out some hybrid strap/easy release bindings that will suit us nicely. We'll definitely rent from these guys on our next trip up and hopefully buy if we're into it and can find a good sale.

From there I stopped off at my favorite spot on the Jefferson St. overpass of Highway 16 that has a view of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Today the bridge(s) were looking good in the later afternoon light and the clear, winter weather afforded some sweeping views of the peaks of the Olympic Mountains. After passing the spot I turned my car around to snap some photos. The only thing I found aside from a couple decent shots is the fact that many of my shots of the towers holding the Narrows Bridge(s) up were not aligned well to the vertical. In shot after shot the spires were tilted slightly to one side. Maybe I didn't have my V8 or something but I just couldn't figure myself out. Anyway, I'll just have to practice on poles and the corners of buildings. Sheesh.

can I cut back the small "sucker" branches at the bottom of the trunk on a japanese maple in the mid spring, or do I need to wait until fall?
