Homemade compost bin and dinner with friends

After previous mentions and murmurs about building a homemade compost bin, today I actually started doing so. After waking up kind of late and paying some bills, I decided to enjoy the weather and get outside. I busted out the ol' push reel and trimmed up the back two areas of lawn. It was in dire need of a mowing and looks far cleaner because of it. I also did a bit of grassing (not weeding) to clean up an area where we planted our hydrangea along with some lavender and some bulbs that are just now beginning to peek up above the bark dust.

I broke for lunch then headed back outside to begin work on our wood palette compost bin. Thanks to a successful hunt of the final three wood palettes I needed by Steve (of the Ferguson's) I had everything I needed. Today, the final piece of the puzzle, time, came into play. It took me some time to figure out a design and the dimensions I wanted for the compost bin but finally settled on something that would hold a good amount of compost and still allow me to roll our garbage bin out to the alley for pick up. I did some sawing, reinforcing, and some screening and got pretty near done with the thing. I'll write up a proper Projects page once it's all ready and merely tease you here with a couple photos from today.

After Sarah got back from the gym and work, and I cleaned up from the compost bin project, we cleaned ourselves up and headed out to Bonney Lake to have dinner with a couple friends. They cooked us up some chicken parmesan and we got caught up over that and a tasty salad we brought. Sarah made an apple crisp for dessert but we instead went to a nearby Coldstone for ice cream -- very rich and oh, so filling ice cream. I could barely eat half of what I got before getting full. We stuck around there playing a couple games of Scene It, talking some more, and playing with their cats. We had a great time out there and might be seeing more of Kristin if she gets a job she's interviewing for in downtown Tacoma. Good luck and have a great interview! And thanks for the great night. It's always a good night when you can spend it with friends.

Man, I miss American ice cream - the super thick kind just doesn't exist here (and neither does the nice flavours.) I never did dig Coldstone's too much, but there are days when I would kill for Baskin-Robbins. In other news, I've dropped my masters! This is actually good news, since the department equals stink. I should update the blog, eh?
