Review ~ St. Patricks at Pour at Four in Tacoma

After a good week and Friday at work Sarah and I hooked up with a couple friends for some dinner and chill time tonight. We decided on wine and food at Pour at Four in the heart of Tacoma's Proctor district. We arrived somewhat early in the evening (and slightly before they dimmed the lights) and had no trouble snagging a table for four without reservations (good thing since they don't take them anyway). The service is prompt and friendly which is needed if, like us, you know little about wine and are face with a great selection on their menu. Everyone ordered something from their wines while I enjoyed a Moose Drool beer.

Although not their forte nor their focus, Pour at Four's dinner menu is generously diverse. Everything comes from a pretty small kitchen but the flavors they kick out are pretty solid. I usually side with the beef tenderloin. It comes on top of some buttery potatoes with some asparagus as garnish. The portion is perfectly sized to allow for a few glasses of wine along with dessert. Even without more wine or sweets it's a nice departure from the normal American restaurant, pile-it-on, more for my dollar, kind of experience. The lobster bisque left a bit to be desired for the ladies in our group. It was a bit fishy and a lot salty for their taste. They are, however, pretty harsh critics since their primary comparison comes straight from Tacoma's Lobster Shop. Steve (of the Ferguson's) was pleased with his calamari but disappointed he couldn't get any sauce for it. The chef tried to whip something up but with horse radish as the main ingredient, Steve wasn't duly impressed.

All in all, however, being a wine bar first and restaurant second, Pour at Four is a great place to spend an evening. The atmosphere is inviting and warm and sometimes they have a piano player adding that special touch that makes you want to come back for more. We'll likely be back now and then but, since we're less wine-centric and more food-centric, it won't be every week. If I had to give Pour at Four a rating, it would be "Once every couple months."
