Mondays in The Loop

Work today was productive and pretty swift-moving. It is, however, nice to unwind by watching the newly debuted show The Loop. My day went quickly because, I'm convinced, listening to music all day can really put me in a zone. A very productive and concentrated zone. I still need my away time in the form of breaks and lunch but it's great when work time flies. It must mean something's going right.

After a workout tonight Sarah taught a clarinet and piano lesson for the daughter of one of our friends. While the magic of music was happening I made some dinner and headed upstairs to watch the first two episodes of The Loop. This new comedy centers around a 23-year-old airline executive named Sam that was hired by a somewhat jaded older boss seemingly on a whim based off a thesis paper our hero wrote. The ploy is that since the main character is still living with some college friends he has two lives that will likely often conflict with comedic results. The whole partying friend thing doesn't do much for me but Sam's role in the airline company with his foul-mouthed boss and an older, sex-kitten VP Meryl is pretty funny. At every turn when Sam screws up in his normal life he finds a way to turn it around and somehow please his boss who, in turn, makes and example of Sam in front of all his piers in the company (all the while calling Sam by his office nickname of "Thesis"). Meryl is always using her power to enable a reverse-stereotype sexual harasser that constantly objectifies Sam at every turn (favorite line, to Sam: "...Let's see how many times 24 goes into 48"). There's also a mildly amusing assistant named Darcy who's the same age as Sam but is always emoting, under her breath, about how she knows how to send an email and do other menial tasks because she went to MIT. We'll see how long that stays funny.

All in all, it's not a bad show. I'm a big fan of comedies with no laugh track and this is one of them. It helps me find what's funny and not be prompted to go with the crowd. I'll probably watch The Loop a couple more times but, unless they don't try something other than the partier/executive thing, I'll likely give it up.
