Now we can't walk around the house naked
At least not before we put a cloak over our new webcam. Thanks to friend Steve (of the Fergusons) we have a great new webcam online to help us keep an eye on kitties. The camera was a demo model given to Steve's security company that they couldn't get working. Since his IT guy couldn't make the camera work he said I was welcome to give it a whirl and that, if it works, his IT guy needs to head back to ITT.
Having as little ego as possible, I usually bow down to the tech overlords when it comes to new product installations. Even if I know what I'm doing sometimes the simplest of tech tasks can take hours. With this webcam in hand and with no recognizable name on the box, I conceded defeat before even plugging it in. I tried one thing first that didn't work. Once I switched which network hole I had it plugged into, the CD's discovery program found the camera on my network and I was immediately able to plug in the right numbers to make this thing fly! No fuss. No trouble. Instant remote video and still images. And it all took about 5 minutes -- no kidding!
So, yeah, Sarah and I had fun keeping a remote eye on kitties today and you can too in the webcam area linked from my homepage. All fun aside, I may pony up and get some wireless cams similar to this to do some watching over our house and 'hood. I figure if the neighbors are interested, I could certainly share the ones pointed outside that include the street. One can never have too many eyes -- or maybe they can.

I know a Seattle Stars star
The local talent competition Seattle Stars crowned its newest star last night. And I know her. I tuned in while sick last Saturday night and did a double take when it came to one of the contestants Rachel. I couldn't quite figure out my sense when I first saw some promo clip but I figured it out pretty soon thereafter. She went to my high school (Hudson's Bay) and was involved in some of the same art-related activities as I. I was more closely involved with her older sister Erica because we were the same age and in jazz choir together. The funny part was that, when Rachel sang on the show, I could still hear tones and syllables I recognized from both sisters back pre-1997! I consulted a pile of photos I knew I had of then-Rachel and, sure enough, it was definitely her.
I hope they're both doing well but thought my Bay alum readers out there would get a kick out of this. Last night during the show's finale, I even saw Erica in a dark audience shot. It's funny how people can change over nearly 10 years but what's funnier is how they don't change.
Congrats Rachel on your Seattle Stars win! I can't say what I saw of the competition was very impressive but you definitely could hold a note better than anyone out there. Nice work and enjoy your winnings (plus you got to meet Chris Ballew -- how cool is that?)!
