Jr. Daffodil Parade and lunch at the Europa Bistro

We got up around normal work day time to get ready for our busy day. First up, the Proctor Junior Daffodil Parade and the arrival of my parents. Sarah took off to find a spot along the parade route to snap photos and cheer on her clarinet/piano student who marched with her middle school band this morning. I stayed at the house and greeted my parents who came up to spend some time with us for the day. As the rain began to fall we grabbed our umbrellas and walked the six or so blocks from our house over to the Proctor District to watch the parade. Although kinda' wet and cold, a pretty good crowd was out and the parade itself was full of fun entries from local school marching bands and boy scout troups playing drums on buckets to dogs, bunnies, candy-slinging machet elephants and pirates. Daffodils were handed out liberally and were certainly a ray of sunshine on an otherwise typical Northwest springtime day.

Once Sarah's student had passed with stayed until the very end when the events princess court were picked up and a couple fire trucks (one vintage and one modern) could crawl by. Sarah, my parents and I swung around the corner to the Europa Bistro to warm our cold fingers and enjoy some lunch. The tasty dipping sauce and bread was a hit with my dad and a favorite of mine to the point that any meal coming after could just as easily be immediately stuffed into a "to go" box. I did try my hand at eating some crispy crusted pizza with fresh vegetables and some sausage but only managed to take in two pieces.

After lunch I noticed one of the parade participants walking teary-eyed along Proctor. I saw him a couple times through the window while at lunch but only now realized his distress. Instead of walking on home I turned around and caught up with him and offered up my cell phone to give a call to his house. I got a woman who was relieved to hear from me and we found out his dad was supposed to meet him at a nearby church after the parade. We all kept him company and walked him over to the church where his dad came by a few minutes later to pick up his lost and frightened son. I could easily call foul of the boy's parents or his band director that has a history of mis-managing students on band outings but I choose to ignore these things in favor of just making a frightened little boy whole again. The poor kid probably just didn't know where he was suppose to be and lacked the self-esteem to bother a local business to make a phone call. Hopefully he'll quickly forget his adventure and go about his life feeling slightly safer in the fact that no all strangers are evil like so many a Saturday morning special would have them believe.

The rest of the day/night I spent with Gavin sprucing up his website a bit. He made some technical leaps while I re-styled his site to give it a more sophisticated and clean look. Enjoy your new site, Gav, and we'll enjoy reading and seeing what you put up!
