Movies today and friends tonight

I took this Friday off to elongate the already 3-day Memorial Day weekend. I piddled around on my computer doing this and that until Sarah was ready to head out for the day. We decided to play a little cinematic catch-up and see a couple movies. Our trend lately has been to either rent flicks or otherwise be entertained -- visits to the movie theater have been few and far between. As an example, we received four free tickets to see movies at a Regal Cinemas last Christmas and haven't used them yet. Well, today was that day.

We timed our afternoon so we would first catch a showing of X-Men 3: The Last Stand followed by the more cerebral Davinci Code. The installment of the X-Men trilogy we saw was pretty OK at best. It had some decent action and I just always love to see characters in quality comics come to life. The acting was pretty bad and the writing for them wasn't much better. There was little in the way of character development and they pretty much killed off most of the main characters. Heck, although it's been said this may be the last X-Men movie, they even left it open for another. You could certainly rent this later or, as we did, use some gifted ticket vouchers but I wouldn't urge anyone to pay full price for this one.

The Davinci Code was a better show with a story that I truly enjoyed. I haven't [yet] read the book so it was fun for me to get in on the whole phenomenon surrounding it all. I really liked the pace the movie took and the scenery it took me through. The acting was a bit flat but I didn't mind much since I was focusing on the story. It's worth a viewing if, as I'm told by those who've read the book, you want to see everything come to life. For me, I'll probably now go back and read the book. I'm a pretty visual person and will now have a great basis on which to make sense and make more real the writing in the book.

After our long, sedentary afternoon we hooked up with Angela and Steve (of the Fergusons) and their niece Amaya to have dinner at the Tacoma Old Spaghetti Factory. We had a blast hanging out with 5-year-old Amaya and I especially had fun playing games of various kinds with her. Although our somewhat slow-ish, trying too hard waiter kept us, well, waiting a bit, we really enjoyed relaxing and going for a walk downtown after food.

Me thinks that was a pretty decent way to spend my extra day off. I need to use bits of my vacation more often to give myself more of a relaxing break from time to time.

Okay I'll be the first to admit that a 41 year old man looks pretty silly with a spoon on his nose. But this trick has been around for many many generations and I was only trying to pass on the tradition to my neice. How else does such a silly trick get passed on? She will tuck that bit of information way back in her brain for just the right moment to pass it on to someone else, maybe her Daughter or Son or cousin. I'm just impressed she got it one the first try.
