Photos ~ A day full of mushrooms
No I'm not taking part in a 24-hour Super Mario-athon. Rather, I found some fungal delights both in- and outside the office today. The inside one was by far the coolest. A couple of our potted plants haven't been doing too well and I discovered a small, bright yellow mushroom growing in the soil of one of them. I presume the other, light colored stuff just below the soil surface is probably mold (or more spores, as closer examination shows) and should be cleaned out for fear that it could get on people's nerves (literally, perhaps).
The other mushrooms were found safely outside. They are both enjoying life in a planted area on a street corner right near our office. Although not funky colored like the indoor specimen, these 'shrooms are beautifully mushroom-shaped and of a decent size.
So which would you eat? Given nature's uncanny ability to clearly label its warning clearly with bright colors (take redheads, for instance) I'd steer clear of the yellow mushroom. The ones growing outdoors are far less sinister looking and might be a tasty treat for a passing dog or homeless Tacoma fellow.

Yeah, that close-up was kinda' like peering into another world. The offending plant and it's spore-filled dirt have since been removed from the office.

I too have the same color shape and size of mushrooms growing inside my christmas cactus that is 20 years old. It's freaking me out really. Any suggestions?

Kathy: Not sure what to suggest other than re-potting. I've had a few plants at home with soil that gets some little fuzzies from time to time. It's generally with the plants I've had for a while. I'd say some fresh soil would do the trick.

Kris: I found this webpage kinda' helpful

Seems like, unless you're alergic, it's pretty hard to be poisoned by any mushroom unless you ingest it. Doesn't seem like a healthy thing to have around though. We tossed the soil once we found those yellow guys in the one at our work.

I sure wouldn't eat them. I'm not an expert, however. Might be good to find a book on mushrooms or an expert somewhere to determine edibility.

Hi guys,
I am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A week ago I found some of these yellow mushrooms growing in my pot of lavender (which I got from Perth last year). I had wanted to get rid of them as I was afraid that they might be poisonous but thought better of it as I find them so pretty!!! My lavender plant does not seem to mind sharing its pot with them too. Anyhow, after looking up for more info on them on the net and reading comments from you guys (and many others) I am going to just let them be.... since they are not toxic to humans They have the right to exist and my little garden is made brighter by their presence!!!
