Skateparks article points to multi-park plan
The Tacoma Daily Index has an article about the hot local topic of skateparks. The notion is definitely gaining steam with relatively little resistence from local business owners. Supposedly the city even pondered a skateboarding ban at one point. Thankfully we've come a long way since then with lively discussion at the public spaces forum last May, on this website, and on the Tacoma BIA blog here and here.
From the article:
"The skateboard community and the business community have stepped up and said, 'A ban is not going to work,'" says [Marty] Campbell, president of the Downtown Merchants Group, and vice president of the New Tacoma Neighborhood Council. "It's unfortunate and downright disrespectful when they are doing damage. But I think it's because there's a lack of places for skateboarders."
Amen. The article also mentions that there's kick-start funding that came from the recently passed metro parks levy and likely more fundage from other sources. The TacomaSkateparks.org folks seem to be advocating a little bit of skating in a lot of different areas and that's an approach I agree with. I don't want to shove some massive park under 705 so we can ignore them and pool skaters all together. Skaters, like the people they are, live in different areas and should be served by the local parks as other sports players are.
Shoot -- this all reminds me the clock is ticking to next snowboarding season. I better get out on my long board and practice up!

Pita Pit opening on 9th and Pacific
Pita Pit USA will be opening a new Tacoma restaurant at 9th and Pacific. Judging by their website it looks like a good place for a light meal. Although the site looks like its characters are Veggie Tales rejects, I'm all for more dining options downtown. Too bad our office is no longer on that side of town. Dang. The Link it is!
