To "The Dean"
Family friend Pat "The Dean" Chadwick passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer. Her fond memory will surely live on in her friends and certainly her children and grandchildren.
The following is a little something I wrote after hearing the news.
to The Dean
they don't do
they don't be
they don't are
anymore
they just stop
make no sound
move no inch
still is all
what happens then
something
nothing
who knows?
who should remember
what some will forget
as one single day
fades into forever
we move along
we move together
better because
you couldn't be never
I knew her best through my mom's work with her at the University of Portland where "The Dean" was a well-respected and beloved colleague. Read UP's press release. Although I personally never attended nor, when I was younger, knew what a dean was, that's the name I came to know her by and forever will. In my mind and even while at PLU, "The Dean" was her and no one else.

Weekend events: get out while you still can!
Don't forget the sad fact that the days are getting shorter and with all that wishing for cooler weather, Fall will be here before we know it. So, why not use this time to get out and enjoy what's happening around town?!
Ethnic Fest
Head down to Wright Park from noon to 7pm Saturday and Sunday for an event full of art, food, crafts from areas around the world. There will be plenty to do for the kids and entertainment that's sure to impress. More info here and here.
Goats in Blueberry Park
I mentioned last week that a herd of goats will be gnawing away at weeds in Tacoma's Blueberry Park. Fences will be setup at 3pm on Saturday and the goats will make their debut at 4 or 5pm. They should be there for a few days and visitors are welcome. More info can be found on the Metro Parks website. While you're at it, why not come early on Saturday for Bluegrass in the Blueberries.
Music and movies in the parks
Metro Parks is helping keep us busy by beginning their serious of free live music and movie viewing in our various local parks. The series starts this Saturday night at Ethnic Fest and weekends on through September.
Tennis in (where else?) North Tacoma
The Tacoma Lawn & Tennis Club is hosting the Pacific Northwest Open Tennis Championships. $5 admission per day to see over a hundred men and women take to the lawn/clay/court/whatever. Don't know times but I assume it's all day Saturday and Sunday to fit in so many matches. Map. (via Spew)
urbanXchange 1st Anniversary sale and dance party
Grab some cheap and sweet threads downtown at urbanXchange then head up to Club Zoe at 9pm for a dance party. $2 for that but, if clubbin's not your thing spend that Jefferson on clothes -- you could probably re-fill your closet there for that. No info, just a flyer.
What else is going on? Drop in a comment below or send me an email. Enjoy!
