Ever have a bad technology weekend?
Some people have bad hair days, I have bad tech days. Although we enjoyed some great times downtown and even bought some new plants for around the house, I had a pretty bad technology weekend. First, my Palm died. Or the screen did. Or something. Whatever the case, it doesn't turn on and that's a real thorn in my side. I'm someone who prides himself on avoiding the use of paper at work and elsewhere in life simply because I'm too messy a person to let it even hit my desk. I must have a genetic nesting tendency since somehow any amount of paper will cover a nearby surface in a chaotic fashion. Anyway, this kinda' honks me off because I only purchased this particular Palm once I knew I was changing jobs last summer which makes it a little over a year in my hands -- likely out of any warranty that might cover it. I'll do some looking around but aside from trying to find a replacement screen to try out, I may be up a creek on this one.
The other tech problem that ran across me this weekend was the new server I just purchased. This and other websites currently hosted by me need a newer and more robust home that can more steadily be relied upon. Parts I ordered from Newegg.com should be considered pretty cutting edge but, upon trying to load what I need to run a server, nothing seems to be working. I think the hardware is just fine but it's the software that's not playing nice. I'm sifting around trying to find a way to make it work but I may be returning some items in exchanged for older hardware to help guarantee its compatibility with the software.
Sigh. Oh, and my desktop PC has been acting slightly funny for a couple months. Thankfully now I have a new, second hard drive in the thing so it just might be time to back everything up and do a clean OS sweep. Sounds like buckets of fun to me.
Isn't it amazing how things seem to come in waves?
Thanks for listening and feel free to share your technology woes with me here anytime.

Name that space - Step IV: The Poll Results
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Pacific Plaza naming poll. The results are in and the standout name you chose was Pacific Plaza. Here's a quick rundown of the totals:
Votes
23 Pacific Plaza
8 Triangle Square
7 Pacific Steps
7 Rainier Square
5 Tollefson Town Square
4 Pacific Promenade
2 People's Plaza
1 Cascade Square
1 Convention Center Plaza
1 Harold M. Tollefson Square
1 Tacoma Art Plaza
1 Tacoma Triangle
1 Tollefson Pacific Plaza
62 TOTAL VOTES
Although the total number of votes may not seem like much it's past my goal to be able to make a point to the city council. That point is that on any given day at any give council or landmarks comission meeting is there ever over 40 or 50 public participants expected? If not, the poll on this website shows that, with a little effort, participation can be raised with some creative thinking so more people that live in this city can feel included.
Thanks again for voting! Over the next couple days I'll layout what I plan to say on the Pacific Plaza renaming topic at the Aug. 22 council meeting. I got a couple emails from my op ed piece in yesterday's Trib so my energy on this topic continues to be high. Keep next Tuesday night at 5pm in-mind because I'd like to have a few people besides me there to say a word or two in support of this issue. More to come.
