Get 'Smart' on Tacoma's roads
Although I'm surely more into promoting something like a streetcar to get around, I'm not opposed to pointing out a local biz or two that's willing to buck the automotive trend a bit. Local seller I-5 Motors just across the city line in Fife has a small crop of Smart cars for sale. You see them all over Europe and now even up in B.C. but not so much here in the States.
A quick call to their sales office and resident "funny guy" (salesperson/stand-up comic -- really) told me they had a dozen imported a couple weeks ago but have only seven left. Sounds like these autos (although not posted on their site) will max your wallet out at $28K -- which still isn't bad considering they're imports.
Best thing about them is they'd work for so many people in this area. The non-diesels (which these are) get about 40 MPH with an 8.7 gallon tank which will get you pretty much where ever you need to go around the Puget Sound. They're parent company is Mercedes and these things are built to be safe. Have a look at a crash test video I found and notice how the passenger area doesn't crumple. For folks like Sarah and I who live and work in Tacoma something like this would make a perfect second car. But only if it was a bit cheaper.
Anyway, if anyone gets over to test drive one or has already, chime in below. Cheers!

Check these out. Tesela Motors has a semi prototype out of a sports car that is all electric! 0-60 in 4 sec, 135 mpg equivalent, 250 miles per charge, about 1 cent per mile.
