Excuse me while I toot my web development horn

New SiteCrafting websiteTacoma web development firm, and my humble employer, SiteCrafting launched a spiffy new website today. Around the office, we're all pretty proud of the new site which is why I'm tooting my proverbial horn here. Heck, there's still features we want to add but loved it so much we just couldn't wait to get it out there. We aimed for the site to be a cut above the rest yet still get the the goods on our goods and services across to current and potential clients. We're also opting for more comfortable and hopefully more inviting "human" language throughout the site. With so much technology and jargon so far out of reach of many people we thought it was time to break that down a bit and, gasp!, heaven forbid, even have a little fun here and there.

The new site speaks well to every facet of our company from the rock solid and sophisticated sites we crank out to the whiffle ball we play in the office to unwind. I'm particularly proud of how easily the site layout scales for large font settings and seamlessly prints like it was created for paper. Feel free to toss any comments my way and I'll be sure to pass them along. (Psst... I happen to know the guy who made it). So cheers to good and standards-friendly web design. May it make the Internets a better place for us all!

Oh yeah, and "Toot, toot!"

Your entitled to toot your horn Kevin. Plus, it's better than having banner ads on your blog.

Erik: I suppose in an indirect way my job does help pay for this site. I suppose, however, that if I were jobless I'd have a lot more time to write. But I don't want my boss to get any ideas! ;)

Joel: Gee, hmm... I wonder who that network infrastructure and support provider could be (http://www.opticfusion.net/) Keep up the good work!

Perhalps this will be the spark we need to get the fire buring under my bosses to get our new AFX website launched... for bloody sake.

The new site looks great! The markup under the hood looks nice and clean, as well. SiteCrafting never ceases to impress...

Ok Kevin. How much does a web page of yours typically cost?

by Erik

Thanks Darren! It doesn't validate but it's pretty darn close.

Erik: My site costs only my time. That and DSL connection fees not to mention the cost of a recent overhaul of our server hardware. Not much, though. Donations are certainly accepted! ;)

Looking great! Anyone from your team going to make http://www.aneventapart.com/ if so see you there!

It is a nice looking site... though I have some constructive criticism: 1. remove the tables for the 3 column layout in the footer/portfolio. 2. fix the validation (like you mentioned). 3. Maybe checkout the javascript tabs on homepage to work in Opera. 4. Maybe scale back the 'budy-budy' voice of the content... I think I saw "Blah Blah blah" somewhere in the services? 5. And finally, whatever happened to URL (earl)? He was my favorite vacuum robot. :)

"Erik: My site costs only my time."

I was speaking of the web crafting sites you work on.

Site Crafting doesn't give those away do they?

Nope. We're certainly not free. There is, after all a ".com" after our name not a ".org". ;)

Michael: A couple of us from SiteCrafting will indeed be at An Event Apart. Keep and eye out for me -- I'm the one that looks like the guy at the bottom of this page. Except I have ears in real life.
RR: Thanks for the feedback. This is a soft launch of our site so we'll be refining it over the next month. The validation is already in better order and Url will be added back in shortly.

We'll be working on the text but really want to keep it welcoming and let our work speak for itself through our portfolio, upcoming client list, referrals and testimonials. We figure it's actually a nice break for someone to come across a site that's somewhat more conversational than one with too much "industry speak". As for Opera, we'll give it a look but tested the site to work in IE 6, Fx (pc and mac), and Safari. We generally don't test for Opera unless a client specifically requests we do so.

The tables on the homepage were all me. I'm big against tables for major or full page layouts but once something gets over two columns I'll opt for a simple table with plenty of mark-up for CSS control.

Thanks again!
