Photos ~ Matador restaurant metal work

A new restaurant will be gracing the corner of 8th and Pacific soon. The Matador, as it'll be known, brought in some impressive metal work to greet people to their restaurant. The Pacific facing corner is now covered with a nearly 20' tall black metal archway. It features winding and knarly flame like patterns, a couple what appear to be torches, some silvery accents, and what looks like a spot for a sign on top. It should be pretty stunning when and if the torches spit real fire but I certainly hope visitors take a look at the craftsmanship and artistry that went into this gem of something like $15,000.

What more? It's nice to see new businesses willing to invest that kind of money in something so relatively non-essential downtown. In a way, it kinda' shows that Tacoma's worth it.

Wall set to block downtown views blocked (for now)

Remember that little mystery wall blogged about here and here on my site and over at Exit133? According to a couple different sources, someone on the City Council asked about it and the City subsequently put a stop-work order on the project. It'll be interesting to see what comes of it.

My hope is that folks around town will drive, walk or Link by and see the "could be" that's there now. That corridor of Pacific is very pedestrian un-friendly with limited [legal/safe] crossing due to the tracks and four lanes of auto traffic and sparse much to do beyond UWT and Grassi's. With only the rebar meant to support the proposed wall in place you can get a great idea of how open, inviting and even beautiful an open path to the Bridge of Glass would be.

Drop your comments/opinions in the comments here and I'll be sure to send them around to folks over at the WSHS and City Council so, together, we can encourage a more pedestrian friendly and open downtown.

Another fire in Tacoma tideflats

Looks like there's another fire down in the tideflats. Seems like it's been mostly put out now. Plenty of sirens headed in that direction from downtown and a large black ploom of smoke stretched south shrouding the view of Mt. Rainier.

Details and pics once I'm at home not typing this entry on my Palm.

Update (2006-09-27 @ 9:01pm)
Got some photos up but don't have anymore details. My guess is this was a truck or gas fire of some sort. The smoke burned really thick and black but didn't burn for more than 10 or 15 minutes. Here's to hopein' no one was hurt and that this was a minor incident.
