Never afraid of scrapping a bit

We have a new neighbor across the alley from my office. For a time we didn't know what their trade was until just the last week when palettes of scrap granite started showing up outside. After a chat with an employee I learned that they're part of a local granite counter and hard surfaces place (crap, I forgot which company!) with their showroom over on Center Street. They bring in the huge sheets of polished granite and cut 'em up with some seriously impressive, computer-controlled equipment.

Although not in the market for new counter tops, I did notice what I thought were scraps they'd been leaving in the alley. Sure enough, that's exactly what it is and it's free for the taking. I snagged a bit Friday afternoon with designs to wash it off and make use of some of this beautiful stone outside around the house and in the garden. Yesterday I broke up some longer pieces of dark and light granite into bricks that we used to make a simple border between our lawn and a patch with a couple lavender and our lone hydrangea. It'll be fun to use more elsewhere.

Want some? It's in the first alley off Pacific between 27th and 28th Street [ map ]

My dad's been known, as embarrassing as it may be, to find some gems along the side of the road once in a while so I've got the gene. How about you? While there's always places online like 2good2toss.com, feel free to let others know about any great "free, you haul" kinda' stuff around town in the comments below or in an email to me. Free boxes for moving, palettes for compost bins, grease for biodiesel -- it's all good! Heck, if I get enough, I'll even put together a map Exit133 style!

Where are you located? I googled scrap granite for Minnesota but I get the feeling you are in Washington.

Yea Elizabeth, I'm afraid so. :( I would recommend tho finding a granite countertop place in your state because they'll always have scraps from that process and I can't imagine they really care to hold onto it. Good luck!
