Zoo's record setting aardvark dies
Did you know that Tacoma's Point Defiance Zoo is North America's foremost authority in elderly aardvark? With the passing of their 30-year-old Kikuyu they bid farewell to the oldest such mammal to ever live in captivity. The previous record holder lived to be 29 and also resided at Point Defiance. From the News Tribune:
Kikuyu was in good enough health to celebrate her 30th birthday earlier this month by snarfing a three-tiered cake of frozen insectivore chow frosted with mashed avocado and sprinkled with bits of fruit and meal worms.
Mmm... Sounds like a pretty good way to celebrate a last birthday to me! :P I think it's time to head to the zoo, however. Last time I was at Northwest Trek I had a blast taking photos of all the great animals and have little excuse for not having visited our zoo, but for the recent Zoolights, since I was a kid.
What's your favorite kind of animal to see at the zoo? I'm partial any large cats (no, not our Colby -- he's just big boned!) and birds of prey!

I-5 traffic construction alert
Traffic on I-5 around Hwy. 16 will undergo some changes starting tonight. Here's a list of what to watch out for over the coming week or so (schedule weather permitting):
- 11pm Wednesday: Crews will close the on-ramp from SR 16 to northbound I-5 for striping work in preparation for a lane reduction.
- 5am Thursday: On-ramp reopens, with merge lanes from SR 16 to northbound I-5 reduced from two lanes to one. This revision will be in place until fall.
- 8pm Saturday: Crews begin reducing lanes on northbound I-5 to prepare for second traffic revision, which shifts mainline traffic to the right onto new lanes to get vehicles around bridge-demolition work. This revision also will be in place until fall.
- 9pm Saturday: Crews again close the SR 16 on-ramp to northbound I-5, then close the I-705 off-ramp to conduct more preparation work for the shift.
- 11pm Saturday: Mainline northbound I-5 near the Tacoma Dome is down to one lane, with just the left lane open.
- 5am Sunday: Traffic shift in place and SR 16 and I-705 ramps re-opened.
Yikes. Take it easy out there and pack a little patience this week.
Thanks Sarah!
