St. Helens Cafe brings the 'yum'
Sarah and I stopped by to check out St. Helens Cafe yesterday for some dinner. This was Sarah's second trip and my first. I have to hand it to them. The space is great and the people manning host duties and keeping an eye on the dining area were eager to please but in a pleasant way. We ordered right at the door and sat in the back near the windows. On the way we passed a rather empty looking bar with a great metalwork mural of Mt. St. Helens. There was art of other local buildings adding interest to other walls and the large wood beams left exposed create a comfortable, warm feeling for diners.
Sarah got her fish 'n chips and with their homemade batter and tarter sauce declares them the best in town. I had me a bacon cheeseburger and, although not normally a burger man much (I likes me some buffalo, thank you very much) it was really tasty. The fries hit the spot with a little malt vinegar drizzled on top.
St. Helens Cafe is a great place for a casual meal in a comfortable setting. The prices are a tad high but worth it overall I think. I can't wait to stop by when the weather's better to enjoy their front patio or a seat inside near the garage doors that look prime to slide open.

National Community Theatre Festival coming to Tacoma in 2009
Mark your calendars! Tacoma was chosen to host the American Association of Community Theatre's biennial festival in 2009. From the press release email:
Tacoma Little Theatre (TLT), Tacoma Musical Playhouse (TMP) and The Washington State Community Theatre Association (WSCTA) have joined in partnership to bring over 600 enthusiasts, advocates and performers from around the country to Tacoma in June of 2009 to celebrate the power of community created theatre. Tacoma will host the American Association of Community Theatre's (AACT) 2009 biennial festival: AACTFest 2009.
The partnership presented a bid proposal to the AACT in January. Jon Douglas Rake, TMP Managing Artistic Director, and Judy Cullen, WSCTA President attended the Winter Board meeting of the AACT held in Fort Worth, TX this past weekend to make a live presentation of the proposal. The Board voted in a closed session after all bidding presenters had been heard, and the Tacoma delegation was informed that their proposal had been accepted.
The festival process that culminates in a national theatre festival, sponsored by the AACT, is entitled AACTFest, and is held in odd- numbered years. AACTFest presents a forum for community theatres from the eleven regions of AACT to enter productions for adjudication and advancement from the state level, to the regional level and finally, to the national level....
AACTFest 2009 will involve hundreds of volunteers from around Washington State, and will bring twelve performing companies from around the United States as well as representatives from U.S. amateur theatre companies abroad.
"Tacoma has a great tradition of community theatre, and Washington is one of the western states that is most active in the AACT," said WSCTA President, Judy Cullen. "This festival will be a great event for our local theatres and our state organization. I am incredibly excited about the task at hand and all of the terrific northwest hospitality that we will share with our guests."
Congrats to our community theatre's for bringing such an event to Tacoma!
Speaking of events (shameless plug alert), the community blog resource website I had a hand in creating FeedTacoma.com now has an events calendar. Stop by to see what's going on and submit your events. There are many more features to come but ya' gotta start somewhere. It's all free and should help everyone keep all the great events going on here in Tacoma straight.
