New parking structure proposed for Dome District (update 1)
After emoting a bit about losing 100 parking spots along Dock Street, I had no idea the Tacoma City Council would listen to me then up the ante 30 fold! ;) I guess maybe it has to do with the existing parking near the dome filling up every morning. Whatever the case, they want $90 million to add 3,000 more spots in the area to help make it an even greater transportation hub and to continue to keep cars out of downtown.
An article in today's News Tribune shows how this is merely a proposal with no concrete (get it?) plans drawn up. Cool thing is that it mentions the local movement toward streetcars and how a new facility's fees might help fund bringing streetcars back to Tacoma. I see an impending collision between the struggling Dome District's desire to bring in more business and foot traffic and the city and regional transit folks yearning for to expand this area's connection via train and light rail up and down the Puget Sound region.

What do you think? If you could plan the future of the Dome District, what would it look like?

Museum of Glass now... Museum of Glass
No, seriously. According the the Trib, since 2000 it's been officially named the "Museum of Glass: International Center for Contemporary Art" -- not that anyone around here would know that. Turns out MoG wants to focus more on the "glass" portion of their name since it sounds like they've been getting complaints from visitors expecting more art in that medium than others. My wife, a former Tacoma Art Museum intern, has always enjoyed pointing out that TAM has more Chihuly than MoG. I'm sure that confuses more than a few visitors to either.

'Tis a fine bit of marketing, indeed, to simply name the museum the way everyone refers to it anyway. Reminds me of another local naming issue from month's past...
