Where to get 5's downtown

If you pass me on the street and put your hand in the air you might get a high five, but that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about getting $5. This money isn't free, mind you, but when I need to pull out cash for this 'n that I've never enjoyed that most ATM machines dole out twenty dollar bills and that's it. I'd either have to buy a pack of gum to get change or go to a bank to do so.

Well, Tacoma, if you're in a hurry downtown and need some smaller denominations, have I got a tip for you! Stop by the DaVita building on the corner of 15th and Pacific [ map ] anytime during regular business hours. Their lobby door isn't locked at this time and you're free to utilize an ATM they have just inside near their elevators. This beauty forks over $5 bills that are perfect if you're just grabbing lunch or need to pay back a generous friend. Give a smile to their security guard while you're at it to keep up the access to this great gem of a cash machine resource.

Got any other everyday tips for living in Tacoma? Drop them in the comments below or send them my way.

Also, the ATM there is owned by Sound Credit Union. SCU, like most all credit unions around here, belongs to a "shared branching" network, which means if you have an account at another credit union, you will not incur any fees for pulling out cash. I have a BECU account, and have never had a fee for using any credit union ATM around town.

Yea, it helps not being charged $3 to pull $5 out. Good info though!

I think it would be radical if you could just toss up your hand and snag random high fives from people walking around Tacoma. Like an unspoken rule: 5 up? Smack.

Hehe. You know, defective yeti had a great idea about how to combine the "gimme five" hand smack and ATM features: http://www.defectiveyeti.com/archives/001876.html

Hehe, true dat, spark. Maybe I'll give that a try next time I'm walking through downtown.

Thank you, Kevin! I'm now working in that neighborhood (11th & Broadway) and I'm a member of TAPCO so can do shared branching. Smallest bill I've ever received from an ATM is $10.

Mushroom, you need go no further than...well, 11th and Broadway to find 5's in an ATM, from the WSECU ATM. Also part of the shared branching deal, so all the benefits of the previously mentioned cash machine.

jamie: Good to know. Maybe I just don't pull out as much cash as I used to (thank you debit card!) but it's still good to know where I can get those smaller bills if need be.
