MultiCare boiler plant to feature nine-story smokestacks
An article in the News Tribune this morning gives us a little more detail about the boiler facility MultiCare wants to build on the edge of Wright Park. One feature folks may not like are the nine-story, stainless steel smokestacks it'll have -- three of 'em. We've seen the drawings before (see links below) but knowing the scale is interesting. The rest of the building's description doesn't sound too bad:
MultiCare spokesman Todd Kelley said the building’s architects have built ground-level windows into the brick and masonry building and plan a facade of opaque reflective glass covering most of the building’s east side that borders I Street. The reflective glass is designed to mirror the greenery across the street.
That could be an interesting design if it doesn't get altered between now and construction time. I think, however, for most folks viewing this building from the ground those windows will probably mostly reflect the sky. Laws of light and physics and all. Tilt 'em downward a bit and then you might have something. The smokestacks are also suppose to reflect the colors of the surrounding area. Will they be constantly cleaned or will they develop a dulling moss/mildew like most things that sit outdoors around here?

So, what do you think? Does this sound like a good neighbor to have living next to Tacoma's front yard?

About the Location:
Constructed in 1893, Tacoma's Old City Hall has been an esteemed symbol of Tacoma since its first Renaissance period at the turn of the 19th century. In 1905, the tower was fitted with a clock fixture and chimes; a gift of former Ambassador to France, Hugh C. Wallace, in memory of his late daughter, Mildred. It served as the Honorable City Hall for over sixty years, to finally be abandoned in 1959, then left vacant for over 10 years.
Finally, through the urging of Tacoma's citizens, the beloved icon was saved from demolition and given national historic prominence in the early 1970's. Soon after, a San Francisco developer purchased the building and refurbished it into a professional office center, which it remained until 2005. The current owner, The Stratford Company, LLC purchased the Old City Hall amidst Tacoma's second Renaissance with the goal of repositioning the landmark into downtown Tacoma's premier residential property - The Renaissance at Old City Hall. An exhibit of photographs taken at Old City Hall will be featured in the spring rotation of artwork at the City Hall gallery located on the 12th floor of the Municipal Building and at the Tacoma Public Utilities gallery. All participants are encouraged to submit artwork created on this photo safari to the exhibit. Also available to participants is the possible opportunity to display your photographs through The Stratford Company for artistic, historical, and promotional purposes. Details of these opportunities will be made available to photographers on March 13.
