A little slice of Europe at Paddy Coyne's

Paddy Coyne's TacomaOn the urging from our friend Angela we headed to Paddy Coyne's tonight for the first time to help celebrate her getting a new job. Together with her hubby Steve the four of us met up before happy hour was over. We ordered up drinks and some grub then spent time admiring our surroundings and chatting it up. Although dimly lit the pub wasn't shady at all. The decor was downright historic and had a real feeling of being in a spot that's been there for a couple hundred years. Strong woodwork, some decent stonework, and touches of stained glass on the lights and around the bar make Paddy Coyne's feel classic. Steve definitely approved of the likely original mosaic tile floor as well.

Three of us enjoyed fine pours of Guinness while Sarah tried and loved a hard cider they had on-tap. Our food came out in good time. Angela and I ordered a side Caesar and grilled cheese with tomato and bacon. The Caesar was good-sized for a side and our sandwiches came with a plate full of thin, crispy fries and a pickle. As for the sandwich, it tasted great overall but I wasn't convinced by the cheese used. Couldn't quite nail it down but as it got colder it got kinda' bitter, if that makes any sense. Sarah got the happy hour fish 'n chips and was pleased. Steve tried a happy hour Irish stew that he and Angela both said was spicy but otherwise kinda' bland. Sounds like food from the British Isles to me!

Best part was that on any old Wednesday night, there was a steady stream of customers enjoying Paddy Coyne's. Together with Doyle's up the hill, Paddy Coyne's helps bring a little slice of close-nit, European style culture right to downtown Tacoma.

'Urban Cowboy' in Tacoma

If you're hankering for a rootin', tootin' good time you might want to grab tickets to see Urban Cowboy: The Musical at the Pantages. From the press release:

The score features a wide range of toe-tappin' country-western hits, including songs from the original film such as "Lookin' for Love In All the Wrong Places," "Could I Have This Dance?" and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Modern classics by contemporary artists like Travis Tritt, Clint Black, Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, Charlie Daniels, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, and Brooks and Dunn, as well as original compositions, complete the musical line-up.

I might even like something like this, despite the genre of music. Hey toe-tappin' music is toe-tappin' music. Too bad McCabe's isn't closer to the Pantages else they might grab some spillover line dancers after the performance.
