Proctor business blips

I noticed a bit of shuffling taking place in Proctor while at breakfast yesterday. One business is expanding while one left a gaping hole of a space.

¡Viva La Fondita!

First, my favorite Mexican food place in town, La Fondita [ map ], is expanding. Their normally comfortable but cozy quarters will soon fill the former Fire & Clay space next door. I know I've referred countless people to their delicious food and friendly service and am totally happy to see their success take a physical form. My hope, as with any growing business, is that they don't lose sight of what makes them great and the quality of the tastes they create. Because, like my reaction to another now expanded local restaurant, this can make the difference between my dining dollars being spent there or not.

Fill that space

Our favorite local Subway has been vacant for months now but it makes me wonder what might replace it? At first I was voting for a Baja Fresh but then I thought about the competition with the aforementioned La Fondita. It also seems like fast food can't survive there due mostly to the parking situation not lending toward a quick in and out. Seems like a prime spot for something though with a great pedestrian population. What would you put there? What is Proctor missing that could help fill up this space?

An ice cream shop or a magazine stand would be my vote.

Magazine are a hard way to try to make money, though.

I don't think ice cream would pose a parking issue, because it's sort of a walking around browsing the neighborhood snack.

OK, here goes:

Sushi joint
Ethiopian food
Upscale tea shop (think Teavana)
99 Bottles (FWay's 500+ beer shop..mmmm)
Caribbian food
Smoothie/wraps
Chicago syle pizza ( I have yet to find a decent pie around here)

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Mmm... Ice cream. Only problem I can see there is it's year-round potential. Maybe some kind of dessert place for folks to visit after their meals at various nearby restaurants. That way it could be ice cream and any other after meal treat. Something not too snooty as well.

Actually, move Affairs from their current crappy location over in UP to Proctor.

Wasn't there a magazine stand in Proctor about, oh, eight or nine years ago? A few doors down from the now-empty Subway?

"Wasn't there a magazine stand in Proctor about, oh, eight or nine years ago? A few doors down from the now-empty Subway"

Yes, it was a Bulldog Newpaper stand.

The area could use a good coffee shop there although I am sure the rent is high.

As for parking, I don't think thats why the Subway went out of business. They don't seem very popular these days.

I think everyone is sick of subway, especially since they put one in at the Y. Also, that particular subway was never very good.

I don't think there's enough room for a breakfast place.

Having eaten at Al's in Minneapolis recently, I can confidently state that "not enough room for a breakfast place" doesn't exist.

That said... I'm in favor of ice cream. Or indie coffee shop. Or doughnut shop.

Mmm... doughnuts... *gurgle gurgle*

What about a really good bagel place?

Or is there one in Tacoma already that I'm not familiar with?

Cascade Bagel downtown is our favorite stop for a quick and seriously tasty lunch. I could go for another such place in Proctor.

Noah's Bagels would be great.

I hope the Subway space is occupied by something interesting, moderately priced and preferably not by a chain fast food restaurant.

I would love to see an all around bakery/dessert place. Somewhere you could pick up donuts & bagels in the morning, an ice cream cone or cupcake in the afternoon and a big slab of carrot cake in the evening. I have often complained that there is no where to go just for dessert. And I am having a heck of a time finding a good cupcake!

I say bring on the sugar!

We walk by the empty Subway all the time. I'm kind of hoping for another sandwich shop, or some other place where you can get a quick but good carryout lunch.

The Proctor Subway always struck me as kind of depressing: no music, loud refrigerator humming, and a bored person working alone behind the counter.

In the Subway - well a magazine shop with beverages and some snacks..
Yeah Angela, that would be very nice, something sweet to take whenever you pass by.
