Some goods on the goods of 'hello, cupcake'
Not satisfied to snap a photo of a sign or peek through a window, I got in touch with part owner Reina Miller of hello, cupcake. She'll play the part of head baker and currently is general contractor for the build out of their space. Quite a range of responsibilities! Plumbing and electrical are happening now at 1740 Pacific but come May it'll start looking more like a shop in time for a June opening.
Here's a quick email Q&A I had with Reina:
Q: Are there any details you can share with my readers about Hello, Cupcake?
A: The concept for hello, cupcake was born over three years ago as a mere daydream and a few hypothetical conversations between my family and I. We didn't know much about cupcake bakeries except what we read in a magazine article, but the idea was captivating. Since then, we've watched as the cupcake trend boomed up and down the east coast and then finally made its way to the west. Last summer we decided it was time to make our mark on the world of cupcakes. Months of brainstorming, planning, and researching has led to what will soon be hello, cupcake. We are very excited to be the first cupcake bakery in Tacoma.
Q: What will your selection be like? What range of prices will your sweets fall between?
A: ...We will offer freshly baked from scratch cupcakes in an assortment of flavors. Everyday flavors will include chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, lemon, coconut, mocha, and carrot. We will offer a few additional flavors on a rotating seasonal basis. All of our cupcakes will be sold for under $2 each. We also plan to carry a selection of beverages including juice, soda, milk, and coffee.
Q: Why downtown Tacoma?
A: We think that downtown Tacoma will be the perfect place for a business like ours. We were initially attracted to Pacific Ave because of the foot traffic provided by the college campus and museums. As we've spent more time downtown, however, we have come to appreciate the unique sense of community, history, and commerce in an area that continues to grow.
Thanks to Reina for her time! Stay tuned as we learn more about opening day. I bet Sarah's going to be eager to try a red velvet cupcake. Mmm...

Haha, she'll love that. Just as long as you pick up some sweets for your respective sweeties.

I would have liked to see some more hard-hitting questions... for example: If a muffin and a cupcake got in a fight who would win?

Or... If someone starving just walked in from the desert and the only muffin you had left was a knitted one, would you sell it to them?

They have a great spot in the middle of everything. I think there was a phone store there before. Now there is a candy store and a cupcake store in the same area. Mmmmm.
Next step : fix up the two last buildings on the block in front of UWT.
