Narrows Bridge lights in the budget

The good news for Tacoma out of the weekend is the inclusion of partial funding for decorative lights for the Narrows Bridges. The even better news? We may get lights far sooner than we thought. The $1.5 million allocated was thought to be just the start of fund raising to light both bridges. In conversations with members of the grassroots NarrowsBridgeLights.org the DOT was very clear they supported decorative lighting but wanted nothing to stand in the way of the bridge construction proper. Apparently that tune has changed and they are now on-board to where they may utilize the $1.5 million as a work order on the current construction project. Putting up lights on the new bridge while the catwalks still stand would save everyone money and the DOT now realizes this.
There are still more details to work out but, if all goes well, we should have a beautifully lit new Narrows Bridge in time for the opening ceremonies. This project will be a huge source of pride for the region and an icon to be photographed.

That would be good news for sure. It makes too good of sense to put the lights in place when there are facilities to do so. Also, we need as many unique and identifiable post card pictures for the area as possible.

Nice wonky work Kevin. You have posted part of the state budget on the internet. Very cool.
I certainly agree it is important to add the lights now. By the way, the electricity going to the lights on the structure of the bridge will be a very small percentage of the electricity used by the bridge to light up the roadway. Also, they will already have most of the electrical equipment available.
