'hello, cupcake' promises treat for all senses
I know some of you have been chomping at the bit (somewhat literally as well) to learn more about when hello, cupcake will open downtown. Well, there's still no precise date. I did, however, have another brief email exchange with co-owner Reina Miller to find out a little background and how things are going.
Q: How are things going setting up the hello, cupcake?
A: Things are moving along nicely at the shop. We've done the necessary demolition, started the plumbing, and the new walls are framed. The shape of the shop is slowly forming into the vision that we started with. By opening day, we fully expect to have created a space unlike any other. We have visited several cupcake shops and bakeries across the country, and never found the "cupcake experience" we had envisioned. This encouraged us to move forward in creating the concept for hello, cupcake. We want our customers not only to enjoy our delicious cupcakes, but enjoy the experience of visiting our shop as well. With a beautiful interior, friendly staff and great background music playing, a visit to hello, cupcake will be a treat for all your senses!
Q: Is this your first entrepreneurial endeavor?
A: This is indeed my first entrepreneurial endeavor. I'm really looking forward to applying my passion for baking to this one of a kind shop. I have been perfecting my cupcake recipes for the past couple of years, and I am confident that the product we deliver will be well received by our customers.
Q: What kinds of challenges have you run into setting up a new
business in Tacoma?
A: Thus far, the biggest challenge in opening the shop has been acting as my own general contractor. It can be difficult coordinating schedules and keeping a timely workflow. However, I am lucky to be working with some of Tacoma's best sub contractors. Also, I was concerned that filing the proper paperwork for construction permits and health department approval might be overwhelming, but I found the various city departments to be very helpful and supportive.
Q: Is there anything you need for the place that the community can
provide?
A: The interest that the community has shown us is really encouraging. We hope that the excitement and anticipation of the grand opening continues to grow and that people join our website mailing list to keep posted of the exact opening date.
All signs point to a June opening so stay tuned...

Impressions from the 2007 New Tacoma Awards
Though I didn't really tell many if any people, I was nominated for a New Tacoma award. Today was the presentation at the Tacoma Club. Among the nominees was new downtown restaurants Paddy Coynes and Matador, Prium Companies, and folks like Jim Merritt, leaders from the City Council, School of the Arts, and the Business Examiner. Even fellow Tacoma blogger Derek Young was up for an award.
Neither of us bloggers went away with top honors but were certainly thrilled and humbled to be on the short list along side so many incredible contributors to our great city. The luncheon itself was a nice event with live music and time to chat with other attendees. It was great to meet Derek's wife Laura (who liked my tie), Scott Larsen from Great Promotions (provider of today's awards whom everyone was impressed with), Dave from the gurus, Patricia Lecy-Davis of Embellish and head of Tacoma's merchant group, and even Jim Merritt of Merritt Architecture. As always, it was great to see Derek, Todd from the Daily Index, and the BIA's Paul Ellis. There was even a skit put on with featuring some seemingly anti-Tacoma characters who were turned on to the town by the new Go Local! campaign.
Congratulations to all the nominees and award recipients and hopefully we can all be an example to others by continuing to help Tacoma move ever forward.
