New Tacoma Narrows bridge opening ceremony July 15
It's official. The new Tacoma Narrows bridge will host a community celebration and opening on Sunday, July 15th! There's a 5K run, official dedication, general public ribbon cutting and tons of once-in-a-lifetime views to be had. You can bet with the lack of any nearby parking there will be shuttles running people from places like TCC to get you to the bridge. It won't be lit up with lights right away but the new and elder bridges are sights to behold when not cruising across or sitting frustrated on them in traffic.

Walkable evening in Tacoma
Sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands. Tonight, for example I had a couple back-to-back meetings at Firehouse Coffee for volunteer web projects I'm working on. After they wrapped up I called Sarah to come pick me up. Since we normally carpool to the office together it can, buy only seldom does, present transportation challenges. After work Sarah dropped me off at Firehouse which is why I needed a pick-up. Or did I...?
Consequently, Sarah was tied up with an appointment of her own. Did I get mad? Did I worry? Did I shade my fist at the sky in a fit of olde time rage? No. I simply reasoned to myself, "Once she's done she'll give a call and come get me wherever I am."
So I just walked home instead. The weather wasn't as toasty as last night but beautiful, near 80 degrees with a slight breeze. I wandered down Union past UPS then headed down 26th through Proctor where the smells from all the open restaurant patios tempted my senses. I then turned onto Proctor past the future pizza place and finished up heading down the tree covered 30th Street.
It made for a lovely wind-down to my evening. Always feels great when something that could be frustrating is turned effortlessly into a memorable occasion. Oh, and I even beat Sarah home! Not bad for someone on foot.
With the nicer weather, I hope to make more of an effort to walk and bike to nearby spots especially on weekends when there's more time in the day. Do you have a favorite place you like to walk to from home or work? Do share!
