PSP comment box

Just wanted to drop a comment out there to the folks at Puget Sound Pizza. I know in the past it's been a bit of a "chicken or the egg" thing with this great pizza place and selling by the slice. Well, to help show some demand, I offer the following.

8:30pm, Thursday night after the candidate forum, three of us were hungry. We entertained a few options including PSP. Would've been a great option since we were only a few blocks from there but, lo, no slices so we all decided to take our business elsewhere for the evening.

After I told my wife this small story she said she agreed and would go there for lunch once in a while during work (as opposed to really never now)

So, there's some demand. Anyone else out there want slices at PSP? If so, use the comments below as a petition. Let's let them know of the demand so they can at least give it a whirl sometime. It's too good of a pizza place not to have an excuse to visit more often.

Well, you already know my vote! But yes, please!

Even though I'm gluten free now, I frequently stop by another local pizza place with the kids, so they can have slices and I can have a salad.

"So, there's some demand. Anyone else out there want slices at PSP?"

Yes. Add my name. I have to walk down about 8 blocks to get pizza by the slice now by UWT.

Another thing you could do is have one of the online petitions going and then send the link around for people to sign online.

Yes. I love that place and think its the best pizza in town. If they did by the slice, I may just move in there.

When I first moved to the Stadium District I went to psp to get a slice and was burned...I had to order an entire pie... that pie then went bad in my fridge because I couldnt eat it all. +1 for by the slice. A slice and a beer please.

I also asked for a slice my first time in there ... I'm pro-slice and I vote.

You can always swarm their myspace page with pizza slice requests.

I would also like to piggyback my PSP demands on your petition...

- free popcorn while waiting for the pizza
- silent movies playing on flat panel displays instead of lame-o sports
- live pipe organist performances from time to time.
- a pinball machine

YES! YES! YES!

Lame-o sports? Oh, brother...

ONE silent movie screen would be alright, I suppose, but sounds like a burden for them to have to keep fresh silent movies running. Maybe RR could volunteer to operate the silent movies one night a week?

Bottom line here: YES PIZZA BY THE SLICE. (And this goes for all pizza places in the area).

Another vote for pizza by the slice.

I would eat more pizza in general if I could just have one reasonable slice and a beer, not the 4 slices and two beers I'll have if we order a whole pie.

Funny you write this....i was with a couple of friends the same night. We requested slices....no go. Instead, we ordered from the appetizer menu.

How about if we all agreed to buy pizza by the slice on one particular day so that they would not risk wasting anything.

Let's see, if I recall, all they needed was a pizza oven which they could pick up on Ebay. How about if we bought it for them and donated it if they agreed to sell pizza by the slice.

Geesh.

This so funny a co-worker and I were just talking about this, b/c I was starving at 2pm one day and had, had no lunch yet, didn't want to go far or to sit down somewhere, I wanted Pizza, but not a whole Pizza. PIZZA BY THE SLICE!!

Well, I hate to be the stick in the mud, but I feel the need to point out some important facts that may be getting left by the wayside.

PSP is in a neighborhood of somewhat dubious distinction. There are lots of greasy, smelly, unsavory folks in the area. PSP is located close to both the Pierce county detox - 1 block away at 7th and fawcett, as well as the Pierce county jail - 4 blocks away at 9th and Tacoma/Yakima. If PSP sells slices, you will all be eating with those folks. That isn't so good if you're trying to run a family restaurant.

The business is not strong enough as it sits to justify having premade slices sitting out dying in a crummy little pizza heater, which is what we would need to have because our space is at a premium. Some days it would be great, other days PSP would take it in the shorts and then the same unsavory characters would be getting into our garbage to get some chow, because......
WHY PAY FOR FOOD WHEN YOU COULD SPEND IT ON METH AND CRACK? JUST HIT THAT PSP GARBAGE! MMMM MMMM GOOD!

Most importantly, letting the pizza sit in a warmer and then serving it to the public is not a good way to impress the Ed Muriettas of the world. PSP is dedicated to serving up high quality stuff and to be quite honest, we would all feel wrong about serving what is best called, "Twice-baked" pizza. It may work for Abella, The Vault or even Sbarro at the mall food court, but I strongly encourage those concerned to not hold your breath waiting for PSP to start selling by the slice. You will most likely turn blue, and that will be it. Sorry all.

I would like to close by saying that PSP pies reheat better than pretty much any pizza out there. 1 minute for a slice in a microwave will get you right back to pizzeria goodness, even after it has been in your fridge for the better part of a week. Get down!

PSP bar manager,

You shed light with some great points. Thanks for clarifying. I don't see how anyone can argue with that.

Bar manager,

These are great insights that we, as customers, couldn't see. Thank you for caring enough to let us know why this demand can't be safely/cleanly met.

It's great that so many people love the food enough that they want to create more opportunities to eat it!

I fail to see how the garbage diving will be be affected by the pizza by the policy.

Given the huge and growing demand for pizza by the slice in the north part of downtown, someone somewhere is going to fill it eventually. I see that Capers is coming in (though will not likely sell pizza).

I wonder if Meconis would consider it. Perhaps there is activity for a new pizza place in the area. There certainly appears to be the demand.

Erik, I would encourage you to re-read my original response regarding PSP and slices from January.

We have a space issue. The PSP kitchen is maxed out in terms of space. We are in the basement of a 100-year old building with no more room for growth at our current location. Plain and simple, we do not have the room to add any more equipment. Your offers to go on Ebay and buy, and then donate, PSP a warming heat lamp were very gracious.

We may, under the right circumstances, be interested in a small satellite space downtown, but even then as you know commercial rents have gone through the roof in the past 16 months downtown Tacoma. If would be difficult to run a successful slices-based restaurant downtown, where the lions-share of your customers were lunch-based, and the only thing you offered was slices.

Sometimes hard decisions have to be made to run successfull businesses and we have always done our best to run Puget Sound Pizza the right way.

We live in what was the Old West ... and the old saying "don't change horses mid-stream" is ringing in my ears. It means once you've committed to something, you are committed. And we are.

Erik, as someone that provides professional advice as a career, where is the sense, for us as a business to, after 3 years of developing a successful, well-run, well-liked business ... and then going and changing the whole darn thing.

We love where we are and what we do and the people we do it for. I am biased because I think I have the best restaurant staff in town. They go to battle for me and for PSP every day and they continuously give their best honest effort, which is all I could ask for as the owner.

Thanks for your time and interest and dedication to making Tacoma better for everyone.
