Thursday's too busy? Try Tuesday instead!

Seriously, there's always so much crammed into Thursday evenings lately it's hard to keep pace. Fortunately for Tacomans we now have more busy days in the week. Take tonight, for example. My schedule will look a little something like this:

So, yea, busy stuff. Should be a fun time though. Any other takers? I suppose eventually all these great events will start spilling over into every day of the week and maybe then we'll have more people coming to Tacoma for entertainment than leaving it.

Photos ~ House demolition on 27th and Pacific

The old house standing in the parking lot of Superior Saw at 27th and Pacific is no more. A huge claw tore it apart this morning. The area is zoned commercial so maybe something interesting could be coming to the spot. Hopefully real estate even in this part of town is worth enough to do more than use it for parking. I'm sure everyone here in my office (across the street) will be rooting for something food- and/or drink-related. We certainly enjoyed a brief break while watching part of the demo. Windows popping, heavy machinery, the smell of scrap lumber in the air -- we're easily entertained.

Hopefully the rose bushes on-site will be re-purposed. If not, a late night botanical heist may be in order. ;)

Capers Downtown Open for Lunch and Dinner (now w/photos)

On my way to a meeting I noticed that Capers Downtown, located at 701 Pacific Avenue, is opening it's doors today for lunch and dinner. Capers features a menu with numerous homemade items available for dine-in or take-out. With this restaurant opening, the corner of 8th and Pacific looks to be 100% occupied.

Hop over to Thrice All American for a review. I'll let you know once we have a chance to try them out. Can you say Wednesday office staff lunch?

MultiCare again avoids public process

In the ongoing issue of the MultiCare boiler plant slated to go up across from Wright Park, a squirrel in the attic passed along the following email. In it is revealed another evasion of public process/comment on MultiCare's part. Here's a little clarification from Tacoma's Land Use Administration Planner Lisa Spadoni as to why their proposed plant with smokestacks reach 90' into the sky won't be up for SEPA review:

Multicare is working on submitting their building permit application for the steam plant. The proposed building size is over the 12,000 square foot trigger for SEPA review. Therefore, Multicare is required to submit an Environmental Checklist and undergo a SEPA review process. In this case, the process will involve an addendum to the existing Programmatic SEPA Determination of Non-significance which was completed during an area wide rezone process in 2002. The addendum process does not have a public comment period or an appeal period, but a legal notice will be published in the paper. This is the normal process used for projects occurring within the City's commercial zone districts.

Wow, so as in the case of avoiding historical review for FUMC they've found another loophole. I challenge MultiCare to open themselves up to comment from the public they serve. How else will we ever be able to live side-by-side with them? How does this make people in our fair city feel? The issue certainly isn't an anti-MultiCare one but one of how to carve out a balance between resident and business interests in a dense and historical part of Tacoma.

Tacoma Film Festival submissions due Aug. 17

Received via email:

Are you a filmmaker who wants to show your work to Tacoma? If so, we are accepting submissions for inclusion in the 2nd Tacoma Film Festival.

The festival itself will be October 4-11 at various locations in downtown Tacoma. Centered at the Grand Cinema, we will have hundreds of entries from all over the world but we would like to be able to promote as many NW films as possible. We currently have submissions from local filmmakers as well as from Canada, Japan, India, Australia & Japan.

The submission fees for the TFF vary depending on the date films are submitted. The first (and least expensive) deadline is coming up on July 7. Films submitted by that date have a submission fee from $25 to $40 depending on the length of the film. Any films postmarked past the final August 17 deadline will not be considered. Multiple submissions are welcome as long as fees are paid for each submission.

For more information, please visit our official website at www.tacomafilmfestival.com. You can also email the Grand Cinema, the hosting organization for the festival.

Hopefully some of the local talent will represent. Anyone planning to submit a film? I know at least one film I'd like to see in the running.
