Third Thursday Artwalk for 7/19

That's right, tonight is yet another Third Thursday Artwalk kinda' night. As always, there's plenty going on. The local "big 3" museums always get involved by waving admission today. A free walking tour from the Historic Tacoma folks will profile our mostly gone downtown auto sales businesses and buildings. There are artist receptions at Mineral, Gallery Madera, and Rampart. Plus, and the one I won't be missing, the guy who walks on molten glass over at the Tacoma Glassblowing Studio.

As always, there's more over at the FeedTacoma calendar where you can also add in your event in case it's not already up there.

So, how about you? Any plans for tonight?

Video ~ Pretty, shiny lights

Being a child of video games (no offense, mom and dad) I'm a big fan of all things eye candy. So this weekend when I got my first look at the lights being proposed for the Narrows bridges I was smitten. Our NarrowsBridgeLights.org group has worked since December to obtain everything needed to again add decorative lights along both of the stunning spans. We prepped for our booth the night before the Sunday bridge opening and got to see the amazing LED-based system in action. Here they are!

There's plenty more work for our group to do but seeing these babies in action really blew us all away and, judging by the overwhelmingly positive 1,400+ comment cards we gathered Sunday, impressed a couple other folks as well.

Photos ~ Third Thursday Artwalk for 7/19 (update 1)

We had a great time out after work tonight. Artwalk didn't disappoint but before we took in art we took in some calories. Thanks the the happy hour over at Melting Pot we enjoyed some cheese fondue, a salad and drink each, and made out for less than $30. Not too shabby. From there we hit nearby Gallery Madera for their show featuring office-themed art. It was a pleasure to meet and chat with owner Carlos and his wife and share some of our perspective and enthusiasm for Tacoma. Great show, too, if you can find time to stop by and catch it. A friend, artist and former co-worker of mine Holly Senn might particularly get a kick out of it considering her medium of choice.

Anyway, we finished up the evening over at the Tacoma Glassblowing Studio. Local glass artist Evan Schauss was on-hand to stomp out his own brand of art -- literally. With his special shoe covers he puts his foot prints in molten glass. The trick is peeling the material from the flat metal plate successfully and fitting it in the oven to cool. Plenty of people were on-hand and definitely enjoyed Evan's brand of art in action.

So did you make it out tonight at all? Do share!

Update (2007-07-20 7:38am)
The folks behind In-Tacoma.net posted a video of glass stomper Evan Schauss with the promise of more to come.
