Photos ~ 2007 Proctor Arts Festival and new neighborhood mural
My Saturday this weekend started off with a cool morning stroll around Proctor. What made that day different was that the main streets were closed off and I was enjoying my first Proctor Arts Festival. Both Proctor and 26th streets had booths of talented local artisans and organizations straight down the middle for a couple blocks in each direction. I had the pleasure of hearing music from the African All Stars whom you couldn't help tapping your feet too and a great flute trio that reminded me of the coordination it takes to play in an ensemble like that or the brass ensembles I played with in high school.
A charming new mural even got its start Saturday on the wall around the corner from the Radio Shack entrance. A large salmon is surrounded by whimsical shapes and colors. Though not yet quiet complete it adds a nice life to that often dark and dull spot. Even added to my Tacoma mural map.
I would've liked to stick around longer to enjoy some of the culinary demonstrations but I suppose I'll have to save that for next year... or just visit the restaurants in Proctor more often. ;)

A note from Nick-n-Willy's in Proctor
While out snapping shots of that great new mural yesterday, I also peeked in to see how Nick-n-Willy's is coming along. A note on their window clued me in a bit. The non-hiring related parts read:
OPENING NEWS!!!!
We are pleased to be on schedule to open in late August.
...
This will be a full service restaurant serving cooked and uncooked take-n-bake gourmet pizza along with several other sides. Individual bistro lunch meals will be available daily. We will offer a fine selection of Microbrews, and will modify our selection as we get to know you.
We are very excited to offer our delicious pizza cooked on site by an exotic Woodstone Pizza oven... Woodstone has designed this oven exclusive to NickNWilly's specs for optimal cooking of our specialized hand tossed dough.
My wife and I are honored to be in this lovely location and welcome any suggestions. We will always place your interests and needs first...
Sincerely,
Chris and Toni Fox
So, sounds like many folks from our previous discussion will be pleased that this will be a place to dine-in as well as take out. And microbrews... sweet! May the work and permitting process be swift and we all hope to see you open soon.

Connecting via video from afar
Sarah's been away for a deserved vacation with a couple girlfriends in Cabo since last Thursday and I miss her. Over the weekend, however, I discovered something new and unusual. There are some websites that don't just use Flash technology to serve up video but to serve it up streaming from your computer live. Some are using it to broadcast their everyday lives but today Sarah and I used it to keep in touch.
Using my Mac at work and our laptop down in Cabo (both with built-in webcams) we emailed one another a photo this morning. I then thought about a site called Ustream.tv that I found this weekend. The idea is that you sign up and can then start broadcasting live video instantly through a connected web or video camera and you can any viewer can chat along side your show all for free. My thought this morning was to have Sarah and I both utilize these built-in cameras to each start our own show and interact with one another teleconference style. With me at my office desk and Sarah in the hotel lobby at the tip of the Baja California peninsula we connected like magic and got to see each other a bit while separated by a couple thousand miles. And it was ridiculously easy and just plain worked.
I'm sure this sort of thing will become more common especially if it's as simple as this was. We even chatted a bit more tonight! Just goes to show you how incredible the 'net can be and why I choose to work in this exciting and fulfilling industry. I miss you plenty, sweetie, but I'm glad this sort of thing can help make the distance just that much less.
